The Tower was quiet in the early morning hours. The soft hum of distant ships and the gentle breeze that swept over the City created a peaceful atmosphere, a stark contrast to the chaos that often filled their days. Liv stood on one of the higher balconies, overlooking the Last City as the sun began to rise, casting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a moment of stillness, something rare and fleeting in their line of work.
Cayde joined her, his presence a familiar comfort. He leaned casually against the railing beside her, his gaze sweeping over the City before resting on Liv. For a few moments, neither of them spoke, both content to simply enjoy the serenity of the morning.
"Thinking about last night?" Cayde asked with a sly grin, his voice breaking the silence.
Liv smirked, shooting him a sidelong glance. "Maybe. It was... nice to have a break from everything. To just be us for a little while."
Cayde’s grin softened into a more thoughtful expression as he nodded. "Yeah, it was. But you know, with all this peace, I keep expecting the universe to throw something insane at us. Call it a hunch."
Liv chuckled softly, though she knew there was truth in Cayde’s words. The universe had a way of never letting them rest for long. But this time, she wasn’t just a Guardian facing endless threats—she had Cayde, and their bond was something that gave her strength.
"We’ll be ready for it," Liv said, her voice steady. "Whatever comes, we’ll handle it together."
Cayde’s gaze lingered on her, a spark of affection in his eyes. "Together. I like the sound of that."
As the morning unfolded, the peace was, predictably, interrupted by a call from Zavala. Liv and Cayde were summoned to the War Room for an urgent briefing. The moment they entered, the room buzzed with tension. Ikora was already there, deep in conversation with Zavala, both of them wearing serious expressions.
"Ah, there they are," Zavala said as Liv and Cayde stepped inside. "We’ve received new intel—something concerning."
Ikora nodded in agreement, pulling up a holographic projection of Nessus. "After your mission to destroy the Vex artifact, we detected unusual activity in the region. It appears the Red Legion isn’t giving up—they’re still searching for something, something they believe will give them power over both the Vex and us."
Liv’s brow furrowed as she studied the map. "The artifact we destroyed was already dangerous enough. What else could they be after?"
Zavala’s expression darkened. "We don’t know for sure, but we’ve intercepted communications indicating that the Cabal are moving deeper into Vex territory. If they’re after another artifact, it could be even more dangerous than the last."
Cayde, ever the optimist, leaned back with a smirk. "Well, looks like we’ve got a date with Nessus again. Just when I was getting used to being away from killer robots."
Liv shot him a look, a mixture of amusement and exasperation in her eyes. "We barely survived the last encounter with those artifacts. This time, we need to be ready for anything."
Zavala gave a sharp nod. "Exactly. This mission is critical. If the Cabal get their hands on whatever they’re searching for, the consequences could be catastrophic."
Ikora glanced between them, her expression thoughtful. "We’ll send a fireteam to support you, but I trust you two to lead this mission. Find out what the Cabal are after and stop them at any cost."
Liv straightened, determination hardening her resolve. "We won’t let them succeed."
Cayde’s grin returned, though there was a more serious edge to it this time. "Guess it’s time to save the world. Again."
Their ship cut through the atmosphere of Nessus, the once-vibrant colors of the planet now cast in eerie shadows as they descended toward the surface. The Vex structures loomed ominously, and the Cabal’s presence was already evident. Heavy machinery dotted the landscape, their forces mobilized in an organized but disturbing pattern.
"Looks like they’ve dug in," Liv said, her voice tense as they approached their landing zone. "We need to figure out what they’re after before it’s too late."
Cayde checked his weapons, his expression unusually focused. "I’m ready when you are."
They landed near the edge of a Vex ruin, their surroundings eerily quiet. As they moved through the dense forest of metal and stone, Liv’s Ghost scanned the area, picking up faint energy signatures. "Something’s definitely off. The energy readings are unstable—similar to the artifact, but... different."
Cayde’s hand hovered near his gun as he looked around. "I don’t like this. Feels like we’re walking into a trap."
Liv nodded in agreement, her senses on high alert. "Let’s move carefully. We can’t afford to get caught off guard."
The landscape shifted as they ventured deeper into the ruins. The Vex structures hummed with latent power, their presence a constant reminder of the planet’s danger. As they neared the center of the Cabal’s operations, Liv’s Ghost chimed again, this time with more urgency.
"I’m detecting a massive energy spike up ahead. It’s similar to the artifact, but... stronger."
Liv’s pulse quickened. "That must be what they’re after. We need to stop them before they can activate it."
They moved quickly but cautiously, weaving through the ruins until they came to a clearing where the Cabal had set up their primary excavation site. At the center of their camp was another artifact—this one larger and more imposing than the last. It pulsed with dark energy, its surface covered in even more intricate Vex patterns.
"We’ve seen this before," Liv said, her voice low. "It’s another weapon. If they activate it..."
Cayde’s eyes narrowed as he studied the scene. "Then we make sure they don’t."
The moment they moved into position, all hell broke loose. The Cabal forces, alerted to their presence, converged on Liv and Cayde with alarming speed. Heavy Legionnaires, flanked by towering Colossi, marched toward them, weapons ready.
Liv moved first, her rifle blazing as she took down the nearest group of enemies. The battlefield erupted into chaos as the Cabal fired back, their massive weapons shaking the ground with each shot.
Cayde was right beside her, his Golden Gun glowing as he fired off precision shots, taking down enemies with ease. "I’ll cover you!" he shouted, his voice carrying over the roar of gunfire. "Get to that artifact!"
Liv nodded, sprinting toward the artifact as Cayde laid down cover fire. Her heart raced as she reached the device, her Ghost immediately interfacing with it in an attempt to shut it down.
"This is more complex than the last one," her Ghost said urgently, its voice strained. "It’s tied to multiple Vex systems. I need more time!"
Liv fired at the advancing Cabal, her pulse quickening as more soldiers poured into the clearing. "We don’t have time!"
Cayde appeared beside her, firing off another round of shots. "We’ve got this. Just hold them off!"
Liv’s focus sharpened, her movements quick and precise as she fought to protect her Ghost. The air around the artifact crackled with energy, and she could feel the mounting pressure as the device grew more unstable.
"Almost there..." her Ghost murmured.
The battle raged on, the intensity of the Cabal’s assault growing as they neared the critical moment. Liv could feel the weight of the mission pressing down on her, but with Cayde at her side, she knew they would succeed.
Finally, the Ghost gave a triumphant beep. "Got it!"
The artifact’s energy surged one last time before it collapsed in on itself, the dark energy dissipating as the device powered down.
Liv let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. "We did it."
Cayde grinned, his eyes bright with adrenaline. "Told you we would."
