The eerie quietness of Io stretched out before Liv and Cayde as they touched down near the Echo Mesa. This mission was simple on paper—investigate reports of increased Vex activity—but Liv couldn’t shake the feeling that something darker lay ahead. Ever since the whispers began, the sense of unease followed her like a shadow, and now it seemed to linger around Cayde, too.

Liv watched as Cayde checked his weapons, his movements smooth and practiced, but his usual humor was absent. His eyes scanned the horizon, his body tense as if expecting an ambush.

"You good?" Liv asked, her voice cutting through the silence between them.

Cayde looked up, a small smile tugging at his lips, but there was something different in his gaze—something distant. "Yeah, just... thinking about how much I hate Io. Too many rocks, not enough fun."

Liv raised an eyebrow, but she didn’t push. She knew the feeling. The Darkness had been creeping closer to her every day, and now it seemed to be reaching for Cayde as well.

He won’t make it.

The whisper was faint, but Liv heard it clearly. It was the same voice that had haunted her nights, but now it was speaking about Cayde. Her stomach twisted, and she forced herself to push the fear aside. This wasn’t the time to let the Darkness win.

"We’ll be in and out," she said, her voice steady. "Just another mission."

Cayde nodded, but the tension in his posture remained as they moved deeper into the Vex-infested landscape.

The air was thick with the hum of Vex machinery as they ventured through the twisting corridors of the ruined structure. Their mission was straightforward—track the Vex movements and eliminate any threats—but something about the place felt wrong. It wasn’t just the Vex. It was the oppressive presence that seemed to hang in the air, like the universe itself was watching.

As they reached a clearing, Liv’s Ghost scanned the area. "I’m picking up strange energy readings ahead. It looks like the Vex are experimenting with a new power source."

Cayde gave a low whistle. "Well, that’s never good."

They pressed on, following the trail deeper into the complex. The Vex were scattered, and the few they encountered were dispatched quickly, but Liv could feel something building—an invisible tension that coiled tighter with every step.

Then the whispers returned.

He’s already lost. You’re too late.

Liv flinched, the words piercing her mind like a knife. She glanced at Cayde, wondering if he could hear it too, but he kept moving forward, his focus entirely on the mission.

But the voice persisted, growing louder.

You will fail. He will fall.

Liv clenched her fists, trying to drown out the voice, but it was relentless. She could feel its tendrils wrapping around her thoughts, feeding her fears, trying to pull her under.

And then Cayde stopped.

He stood still, staring ahead, his body rigid. Liv approached him cautiously, her heart pounding in her chest.

"Cayde?" she called softly, but he didn’t respond.

She reached out to touch his shoulder, but the moment her hand made contact, Cayde staggered back, his face twisted in confusion and fear.

"I heard it," he muttered, his voice low. "The whispers. They’re in my head."

Liv’s blood ran cold. The Darkness wasn’t just targeting her anymore. It was going after Cayde.
