The mission to Titan had been as grueling as they had anticipated. The Red Legion had entrenched themselves deep within the arcology, making every step through the decaying infrastructure a battle for survival. Liv, Cayde, and their fireteam had fought tooth and nail to push through the endless waves of Cabal soldiers, all while the arcology itself threatened to collapse under the strain of the conflict.
But in the end, they succeeded. The energy signature they had been sent to investigate turned out to be a powerful weapon the Red Legion had been constructing—one capable of decimating whole cities if left unchecked. Thanks to their quick thinking and relentless determination, they managed to destroy it before it could be deployed.
Now, back at the Tower, the adrenaline had worn off, replaced by exhaustion and the deep relief of having survived another mission. But as Liv and Cayde parted ways with the rest of their fireteam and made their way to his private quarters, something else lingered in the air—something unspoken but palpable between them.
The elevator ride up to Cayde's room was quiet, the only sound the soft hum of the machinery as it carried them higher into the Tower. Liv leaned against the wall, her body aching from the mission but her mind buzzing with thoughts of everything that had happened. Beside her, Cayde stood with his hands in his pockets, a rare look of quiet contemplation on his face.
When the elevator doors slid open, Cayde stepped out first, glancing back at Liv with a soft smile. "You alright? You've been quiet since we got back."
Liv followed him out, offering a small smile of her own. "Just tired. It was... a lot, you know? But we did it. We stopped them."
Cayde nodded, his expression softening as he looked at her. "Yeah, we did. You were incredible out there, Liv. I don't know how you keep up with all this and still manage to look so—" He paused, his eyes twinkling with that familiar mischievous glint. "—well, you know."
Liv chuckled, shaking her head as they made their way toward his room. "You're impossible, you know that?"
Cayde grinned, shrugging as they reached the door to his quarters. "Maybe. But that's why you like me, right?"
As they stepped inside, the door slid shut behind them, and the noise of the Tower outside seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in the quiet, dimly lit room.
Cayde's quarters were a blend of his personality—organized but with a touch of chaos, filled with small trinkets and mementos from his countless adventures. A few shelves lined the walls, holding random items he had collected over the years, while a small table near the window held a stack of old maps and notes, likely from his many scouting missions. It felt lived-in, personal, and Liv found herself feeling unexpectedly at ease here.
Cayde crossed the room and dropped onto the couch, kicking his boots off with a tired groan. "Man, I am beat," he muttered, stretching out before glancing over at her. "You want a drink? I've got some stuff stashed away that isn't half bad."
Liv smiled, shaking her head as she moved to sit beside him. "I'm good, thanks. Just being here is enough."
Cayde tilted his head, giving her a curious look before his expression softened. "You sure you're okay?"
Liv hesitated for a moment, feeling the weight of everything settle over her. The mission had been tough, but it wasn't just the physical exhaustion that was getting to her. It was the constant pressure of knowing what was still ahead—the shadow of Cayde's future that she couldn't escape.
"I'm... just thinking about everything," she admitted quietly. "About you. About what comes next."
Cayde sat up a little, his expression serious now. "Liv..."
