Toto broke a foot

Unlike how he's credited, Toto was played by an MGM regular, a female terrier dog named Terry. 

She actually made more money than the munchkins. 

But even the dog had some hard times to go through.

At some point during production, one of the winky guards stepped on Terry's foot and broke it. 

She was out of action for a few weeks.
