Satoru brushed a couple of fingers along your cheek. "Is there anything you remember from that day?"
He wasn't sure why he asked that. It certainly wasn't the best time he could have picked. Suguru had just been dragged to the cafeteria by a hungry Riko. There was no doubt that they would be back very quickly.
But the question was out before he could stop it.
Your breath hitched and he immediately felt bad. It really wasn't the time to be asking such loaded questions. He stopped the soothing brush of his fingers against your cheek, opting to merely cup your face.
"Sorry baby. I didn't mean to-"
"It was a man."
It felt as if the air had been knocked out of Satoru's lungs. As if the world around him had both slowed and sped up. Four simple words and it felt as if Satoru had been punched.
"A man?"
It was a stupid thing to ask. But he just needed confirmation. He needed to know what else you remembered. If you could tell him anything more. Anything that could help him find the person.
Well . . . him and Suguru.
If he tried anything on his own again, he was certain he would get socked.
"Yeah." You bit the inside of your cheek and scrunched your eyebrows. "I'm sure of that much. I just - I can remember that. I remember his face. Well . . . not exactly his face. But I can remember the colour of his hair. His face is blurry."
Satoru's heart felt as if it was being squeezed. "Do you remember any distinct symbols?"
You paused as if searching your memory. "No. But there's no doubt in my mind he was an assassin."
You noticed that Satoru's hand seemed to squeeze yours even tighter. No doubt subconsciously. He always did that when he was freaked out - something he did from the very first time you met him.
"Yeah?" His breath came out as a throaty whisper.
"Yeah." You gave him a small smile. "There's no way an untrained idiot could take me out. But this guy . . . there was something about him. He was fast. And he knew things. Someone had clearly given him a file-"
"Hey!"
Immediately Satoru and you stopped talking as Riko entered the room again. You grinned at the girl. "Hi sweetheart!"
You laughed as she balanced three full plates.
Satoru took a moment to compose himself, forcing a smile as Riko approached with her precarious stack of food. The tension in the air was palpable, and he hoped she wouldn't sense anything amiss.
"Got you both lunch!" Riko announced, her voice bright and cheerful, completely oblivious to the conversation that had just transpired. She set the plates down with a flourish, her enthusiasm infectious.
"Thanks, Riko," you said, the warmth of her presence pulling you momentarily away from the heaviness of the moment. Satoru's grip on your hand relaxed a fraction, grateful for the distraction.
"So, what were you two talking about?" Riko raised an eyebrow, her gaze darting between you and Satoru.
"Just some old memories," Satoru replied quickly, trying to keep his tone light. "Nothing to worry about."
You caught his eye, and the unspoken understanding passed between you. There would be time to discuss the implications of your memories later, but for now, you needed to focus on something else.
