𝑇𝐻𝐸 𝑆𝑁𝑂𝑊𝐵𝐴𝐿𝐿 𝐷𝐴𝑁𝐶𝐸 𝑊𝐴𝑆 here and the kids were nothing less than ecstatic. Nancy was volunteering there along with Wesley, but Jacqueline and Steve--despite being glorified babysitters--weren't attending. They were, however, helping Dustin. He really wanted them to help him since he hoped to dance with a girl. Steve and Jacqueline thought he was a nice kid and they cared about him, so they were fully willing to help.
Steve did his hair for him while Jacqueline had picked out a nice outfit. Steve too was driving him over with Jacqueline in the passenger seat. The issue came along when they were giving him advice on how to actually ask out a girl.
They had gone over it a few dozen times, Jacqueline and Steve had had the same argument, and Dustin was leaning towards Steve side because it seemed easier and he wanted to trust the guy who has asked out girls before.
They pulled up in front of the school, where Dustin was very clearly nervous in the backseat. Steve encouraged, "Alright, buddy, here we are. So remember, once you get in there-"
"Pretend like I don't care." Dustin finished his sentence, remembering the advice. Steve repeated, "You don't care."
"I don't care." Jacqueline rolled her eyes and let out a small breath, knowing that that strategy wasn't going to work. She was baffled at the amount of girls he had been able to trick with that strategy. Steve was, however quite proud that Dustin was taking after him.
"Jackie, do you have a mirror in your bag?" Dustin leaned forward, looking over her shoulder. Jacqueline opened her purse and saw a small one, so she nodded her head. "Could I use it? I want to make sure my hair looks good."
Steve looked back at the boy with a brilliantly offended glare, as if it was a crime to question Steve's ability to make hair look good. It sent shivers down Dustin's spine. Jacqueline did turn around and instead of giving him the mirror, she reassured, "Dustin, you look great, alright? You just have to have some confidence. You're gonna walk in there like you own the place, look like a million bucks, and be a respectful, kind young man."
