Ruhi stood in front of her mother, fidgeting with excitement, her bright brown eyes shining with anticipation. The opulent living room of their mansion seemed to fade into the background as she pleaded her case.
"Maa, please? Just this once? I promise I'll be careful."
Her mother, Nalini, sat on the velvet couch, folding laundry with a stern expression. The diamond necklace glinting on her neck sparkled in the soft light.
"Ruhi, we've discussed this before. You're only 17. You're not allowed to drive the scooty without an adult."
Ruhi's face fell, but she persisted. "But Maa, everyone's going to be there! And all my friends are going. I'll be the only one left out if I don't go."
Nalini's expression softened slightly, but her voice remained firm. "I understand, beta, but safety comes first. What if something happens to you on the road?"
Ruhi sighed, frustration etched on her face. "Nothing will happen, Maa. I've been practicing, and I'm a good driver. Besides, it's just a short ride."
Nalini shook her head. "No, Ruhi. Your father would never agree to this either and he is not even here ,And don't forget, your brother, Viren Singhania, will be returning tonight after eight long years. We need to be here to welcome him home."
Ruhi's expression remained indifferent. Viren? The brother she barely remembered? The one who had left when she was just nine years old? She had received occasional gifts and distant phone calls, but that was it. No real connection, no bond.
"Okay, Maa," Ruhi said, her voice flat. "I'll make sure to say hello."
Nalini's eyes narrowed slightly, sensing Ruhi's detachment. "Ruhi, Viren is your brother, your family. You should be excited to see him."
Ruhi shrugged, her shoulders barely rising. "I don't really remember him, Maa. He's been gone for so long."
Nalini's expression softened, but her voice remained firm. "That may be true, beta, but family is family. We'll welcome him home together."
Ruhi nodded, but her mind was already elsewhere. She glanced at the clock – 6:45 PM. The party started at 7:30 PM. She knew her mother would be busy preparing for Viren's arrival.
As she entered her room, Ruhi's mind began to spin. She couldn't miss this party. Not when all her friends would be there. She quickly changed into her party outfit – a bright yellow dress and matching sneakers.
She peeked out of her room, watching as her parents bustled around, preparing for Viren's homecoming. Her mother instructed the staff to decorate the entrance, while she herself supervised the catering.
Her heart racing, Ruhi snatched the scooty keys from the hook near the door. Without making a sound, she slipped out of the house, the cool evening air rushing past her face. The scooty roared to life beneath her, and she sped away into the night, freedom coursing through her veins.
As she drove past the manicured lawns and ornate gates of their estate, Ruhi felt alive. But a tiny voice in the back of her mind whispered: What if I get caught?
She pushed the thought aside, focusing on the excitement ahead. Tonight, she was breaking free from the rules. Tonight, she was going to have the time of her life.
