Days passed, and Ruhi struggled to adjust to Viren's strict rules. Pradyuman's occasional visits added to her unease, their past encounter looming like a shadow.
One evening, as Ruhi helped Nalini with dinner preparations, Viren entered the kitchen.
"Ruhi, I've arranged for you to volunteer at a local charity tomorrow," Viren announced.
Ruhi's face fell. "But Bhaiya, I have college tomorrow."
Viren's expression remained firm. "You'll manage. It's time for you to learn to take responsibility."
Ruhi bit back her protest, knowing resistance was futile.
As they sat down for dinner, Pradyuman arrived, exchanging warm smiles with Nalini.
"Pradyuman beta, come, sit. Have some dinner," Nalini said.
Ruhi's gaze met Pradyuman's, her eyes darting away quickly.
After dinner, as they chatted in the living room, Ruhi excused herself, citing homework.
Upstairs, Ruhi's mind whirled. How long could she keep her secret hidden? What if Pradyuman revealed the truth to Viren?
Just then, her phone buzzed. A text from Rhea.
"Hey, what's up? You seem stressed lately."
Ruhi hesitated, unsure how much to reveal.
"Just Bhaiya being strict," Ruhi replied.
Rhea's response came quickly.
"Pradyuman Bhaiya can help. He's always looking out for us."
Ruhi's heart skipped a beat. Did Rhea know about her encounter with Pradyuman?
Downstairs, Pradyuman helped Nalini with cleaning up.
"Pradyuman beta, you're always welcome here," Nalini said.
Pradyuman smiled. "Thanks, Aunty. I feel at home."
As the evening drew to a close, Ruhi reappeared, her expression sulky.
Pradyuman noticed. "Hey, kiddo, what's wrong?"
Ruhi hesitated before pouring out her frustrations. "Viren Bhaiya's always controlling me. I feel like a kid!"
Pradyuman listened attentively, his expression empathetic.
"Ruhi, Viren loves you deeply. He wants the best for you," Pradyuman said gently.
Ruhi scoffed. "Best? He doesn't even trust me!"
Pradyuman's eyes locked onto hers. "That's because he cares. He wants to protect you from harm."
Ruhi's defiance faltered.
"Viren's strict because he's seen life's harsh realities," Pradyuman continued. "He wants you to be strong, responsible. Trust him, Ruhi."
Ruhi's gaze dropped, her mind processing Pradyuman's words.
For the first time, she saw Viren's actions in a new light.
"Really, Bhaiya?" Ruhi asked, her voice softer.
Pradyuman nodded. "I know Viren. He'd do anything for you."
Ruhi's expression transformed, understanding replacing resentment.
As Pradyuman left, Ruhi realized she'd found an unlikely ally - and an older brother figure - in him.
And maybe, just maybe, Viren's strictness wasn't so bad after all.
