-Alices POV-
Watching Bennett wander around my room, his fingers lightly tracing the edge of my dresser, brought a feeling close to contentment. He was so at ease, so completely captivated by the little things, the cluster of framed sketches on the wall, the delicate trinkets and arrangements I'd curated over the years. I loved how he seemed to find wonder in everything, an innocence that somehow hadn't yet dulled under his usual reserve.
Jasper was giving me a few minutes alone with Bennett, the first time we'd had real alone time since he'd arrived. I knew he was nervous. He'd been like a tightly wound spring since stepping into our house. Yet, as I watched him, he gradually seemed to relax, bit by bit. His fingers stilled when he turned to me, an uncertain but curious expression on his face.
"So you and Jasper have rooms, but you don't sleep in them?" he asked, looking at the bed and then back at me with a kind of naive confusion that made my heart almost flutter. This is his response to a previous comment from me.
I had to stifle a smile. "No, silly. We don't sleep," I said lightly, without offering any further explanation.
His brow furrowed, and doubt and disbelief were written all over his face for a split second. Good. I could tell he wanted to ask more, but some part of him hesitated. He'd get used to our strange habits, bit by bit. Jasper and I had agreed: there was no need for Bennett to know everything right now. It was enough if he knew we'd protect him, that he was safe with us. We weren't human, but he didn't need to know exactly what that meant. Not yet. I don't think he believes me, but he'll find out soon enough.
I let the silence stretch, watching him as he slowly took in my answer, clearly trying to make sense of it. He glanced back at the bed, a faint blush creeping up his cheeks as if he'd just processed something else entirely. The soft pink tint that rose in his cheeks and how his shoulders tensed slightly made him look so pretty.
I wanted to reach out, smooth his tousled hair, and coax that blush into a deeper shade. Instead, I leaned casually against the dresser and just watched him, letting him adjust to the space, to me. Every time he looked away, only to glance back uncertainly, as though checking that I was still there, I felt that possessive surge building up, that familiar satisfaction that he was here with me. And here, he belonged to us.
Watching him fidget with the small items on my vanity was a treat in itself. He'd pick something up, glance at me, hesitate, then put it down again, clearly wanting to respect my things but too curious to ignore them completely. And all the while, he kept sneaking glances at me as if trying to figure out where he stood, what he could ask, what he could say. He didn't need to say anything, though. His every movement told me enough.
"Are you sure you're okay with me in here?" he asked at one point, twiddling with his hands.
"More than okay," I replied smoothly, stepping closer and watching how his breath seemed to catch. "I like having you here, Benny."
His lips parted as though he wanted to respond, but he just nodded, and I caught the slight tremble in his hand when he let it drop to his side. For some reason, that sent a thrill through me. He trusted us, even though his mind was brimming with questions. The way he let himself be here, with all his little hesitations and innocent confusion, made him even more endearing.
As he finally settled onto the edge of my bed, I felt my smile deepen, watching how his fingers traced a nervous circle in the bedsheets. In time, he'd understand, even if he could never quite piece together what Jasper and I truly were. He'd understand that he was safe with us. That he was ours.
But for now, I savoured every moment of his tentative movements, every curious glance, every blush. This was enough for now.
As I settled beside him on the bed, I couldn't help but notice how vulnerable and lovely he looked, sitting there so close, yet unsure. I slid an arm around his shoulders, pulling him gently into my arms. He looked up at me with wide eyes, confusion flickering over his expression.
