We were finally passing the school.
"Alright, so I should take a right turn-?" I had only ever driven with my parents before, and trying to navigate through the random cars on the road was making my heart race, especially with a sheer, steep cliff looming on one side.
Suddenly, I jerked the steering wheel.
"What the-!" Tyler shouted as I swerved sharply, nearly sending us over the edge of the cliff. "What was that for??"
"There was a massive tree root in the road-?"
"That's odd... this road is usually well-maintained."
We felt a jolt as the Jeep hit something, and an uneasy silence fell over us for a moment.
"Are you sure this is the right road?" I asked Logan, anxiety creeping into my voice.
"I'm positive... but there have never been roots in the way like this."
Logan leaned out the window, scanning the surroundings. "Ah! Yeah, there's the gas station we usually... pass?"
His voice drifted off as we drove past the building, now heavily overgrown and shrouded in shadows.
"That's... not a good sign."
"This is getting unnerving... maybe we should find another route-"
Then I heard it. I pressed down on the gas, my pulse quickening. It was footsteps-heavy and echoing as if something sinister was trailing us, its breathing was hauntingly loud like it was right behind those trees.
Wait...
"...Ashlyn. what's up...?" Aiden turned to me with a concerned look.
My voice shook as I spoke, "Something... there was something in the trees."
"What happened to the road??"
Tyler obviously felt the same ill feeling I did. "Ashlyn, we should turn back! Something obviously isn't right-"
"We can't!"
"Why not?!"
"Because...It's right behind us."
