"Next patient, please come in!"

Kalyani was busy attending her regular OPD.

She picked up her phone to casually check the notifications. Without lifting her head up to look at the patient, she said, "Please tell me your problem."

"Ma'am, I have severe chest pain. Probably my heart aches from not meeting you for so long."

She looked up at once. She could not mistake this voice.

"Damn Rudra, from where do you get such cringe lines?

They both burst into laughter.

Kalyani placed her hand on top of his in a warm gesture. Her lips curved at the edges, indicating her gratitude to him for checking up on her.

She had immersed herself in work and barely went out or interacted with people anymore. She would speak to Rudra once a day but still she sounded cold and disinterested.

Rudra had started to worry about her losing interest; possibly in him or in life. He was out of town for the entire month, busy attending meetings on behalf of his father's party.

Things were moving at a fast pace for Rudra. He was elected as the regional party head and was expecting to succeed in his father's footsteps.

Apart from the professional front, he also made amends in fixing his relationship with his father. He was now a doting son to him, the apple of his eye, and he would never let down any of his advice.

"Please send in the next patient", Kalyani rang the bell.

The next patient came in and sat on the chair infront of her. She took the slip he was carrying to have a look at his initials.

The sight of the name sent a shiver down her spine. She froze and her palms started to sweat.

She tried to ignore her reaction and continued to scribble on the slip, prescribing medicines.

But the more she tried to control it and act normal, the more she panicked. The sweat from her palms smudged her handwriting on the paper.

"Kalyani, are you okay?" Rudra was quick to notice.

She nodded her head and sent the patient. She ordered the staff to wait for a few minutes before sending in the next patient. She needed a quick break.

She knew Rudra wouldn't not let her get away by hiding what made her feel uncomfortable.

"Rudra, I think it's high time. Maybe I should open up to you." She looked at him, her eyes rimmed with kohl. "It's about my past. There's this certain incident."

Her breathing grew significantly faster. And so did Rudra's. Although she was in a state of stress, his heartbeat paced up because she was looking into his eyes as she spoke.

Damn. These eyes. I always seem to get lost in them and yet find my soul in her eyes.

He straightened up and got out of his wave. "Who was it?" He blurted out, the vein on his forehead becoming prominent.

"It's actually..." She took a pause.

"I don't need to know. Just tell me the name." He extended his hand and touched her palm, trying to reassure her.

"Karan." She pointed to the name in the patients' register.
