Coming Home: Beabadoobee Track 7 on This Is How Tomorrow Movesᴛᴀᴋᴇ ᴏᴜᴛ ʏᴏᴜʀ ɴᴏᴛᴇʙᴏᴏᴋꜱ
︶⊹︶︶୨୧︶︶⊹︶THE OVERHEAD LIGHTS came to life, shining a beyond bright light right into Olivia's face. Another early morning with nothing but a white cup with a cardboard ring surrounding the cup of joe to avoid her from burning her fingerprints off. Her brown Ugg's being slightly picked up from the grey carpet that surrounded the entire classroom. As she worked on placing down the chairs that were left upside down on top of the wooden desk a slight knock was at her door.
"It's open." Her voice firm and loud informing the knocker. Her hands moving straight to her hair removing any strands that had fallen its way onto her face.
"Morning Olivia, noticed you were not at the staff meeting hun. Where you late?" The questioning voice belonged to an older lady. Someone who has taught Olivia the ropes ever since she started as what was supposed to be a substitute position.
Olivia had made her way to her desk turning on the computer she had left overnight to charge, "Yeah, I was having some problems with traffic. It is absolutely horrid here in Los Angeles." her attention was split between the veteran teacher and the big electrical smartboard that was displayed right in the middle.
"Ahh, now you see why I am always leaving my house early hm hm hm beating that traffic is always a win." The lady began chuckling before making her way to Olivia's big black metallic desk placing sheets on top. "You do know what is coming up right?" The lady had asked now as she made her way towards the desk that still had the chairs on top before lowering them down to the ground.
Olivia only shrugged as she turned over to connect her computer to the smartboard heading towards her music streaming app. "Isn't it some reading charity event?" Olivia had missed the previous year's event by only a month and a half so she was still new.
"Not just any reading charity event! The Los Angeles Dodger's are invited to read to the children now that's something the kids will be excited for. Always the highlight of the year for them!" The voice was enthusiastic, the older lady had wrapped her plum cardigan at the thought of the baseball players attending their school to read to the kids.
"Oh come on Amaya, we shouldn't need someone who hits a ball to tell these kids that reading is important." Olivia rolled her eyes, she never saw the hype for baseball or sports in general but mainly baseball. Growing up in Los Angeles no matter what street you walked in you would always see the iconic blue hat with the white embroidered LA on the front nice and proud.
"Well, I don't watch baseball for the game little one. I watch it for the men hm hm hmm if only you see my husband's face when Clayton Kershaw appears on my screen." Amaya's face broke into a small smirk nodding her head in dramatic movement earning a chuckle from the young lady who was currently writing the daily schedule on the whiteboard that laid on the sides.
"Now look, that I could get behind but still sitting and watching a game for what feels like an eternity is such hard work." Olivia challenged, before turning picking up the flyer that was dropped off by Amaya.
"Just put it on as background noise when you grade or are working on your teaching plans. It'll seem quicker." Amaya had objected before making her way back to the door that would lead her back down the hallway back to her very own class. "Now, there is 30 minutes before class starts and I still need to go print out these student's math homework. So I'll catch up with you later okay hun?"
Olivia only nodded making her way towards the door to ensure Amaya closed it right behind her, once she heard the door shut quietly she quickly scanned the room making sure nothing was out of place. She had checked the prize box ensuring it was stocked, the supply bin where extra stationaries such as pencils, pens, scissors and glue would be just in case students needed them.
Making her way around the room she was busy humming over the song that was currently gently playing inside her room. Once again she had glanced at the flyer that filled with information on the charity readings such as what hours it would take place from, permission slips for the younger kids who were going to be missing out on class time. The change in their lunch time as it will be pushed to an earlier time with some snacks provided in between to ensure the kids wouldn't go hungry.
"This is just dumb. I could do the same thing those baseball players do. I can make these kids want to read." Olivia only mumbled under her breath. Placing the flyer back on top of her keyboard before grabbing the big stack of papers that she needed to pass out to the kids to see how much they retained from the previous math lecture.
As she placed each peace of paper she kept looking back at the time to ensure she had enough time to finish her coffee. She didn't want to keep the cup to long in her class room as the aroma of coffee wasn't truly her favorite smell in the world, the very customized drink was only good for helping her find an early morning energy nothing more. Maybe a small addiction to the iced versions that you could find at your local gas station but this was the ordinary Keurig hot cup.
As she finished passing out the necessary papers, she had made her way back to her desk signing into her emails and she found one that stood out in particular...
