Scotland, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, 20th May , 1992
One Saturday morning, after a quiet breakfast in the nearly empty Great Hall, Lilith found herself drawn outside by the early sunlight spilling over the grounds. The air was crisp, promising a warm day ahead, and she wandered down to the Black Lake, feeling a rare sense of peace wash over her as she took in the glassy surface of the water. She sat down on a patch of soft grass by the lake's edge, hugging her knees to her chest as she watched the sunlight glint off the ripples, casting shimmering patterns across the surface.
She'd heard plenty of stories about the creatures that lived in the depths of the Black Lake—from the squid that was rumored to be friendly to the merfolk who supposedly had a village somewhere below. Today, though, she let her mind wander even further, imagining all sorts of magical creatures swimming beneath the surface. Maybe there were secret tunnels winding deep into the rock, where strange creatures dwelled that no one had yet discovered. She thought of sleek, silver fish with scales like mirrors, of shimmering water sprites that might flit just beneath the surface, invisible to anyone above.
A small splash drew her attention, and she leaned forward, watching the gentle rings ripple out. A dark shape moved just below the surface, and her heart leaped in excitement—until she realized it was only the giant squid's tentacle curling lazily before slipping back under. She let out a breath of laughter, grinning at her own wide-eyed reaction.
As she sat there, lost in her thoughts, she almost didn't notice the quiet footsteps approaching from behind.
"Mind if I join you?"
Startled, she looked up to see Theodore Nott standing a few feet away, hands in his pockets, a hesitant expression on his face. She smiled softly, a little surprised to see him there. "Hi, Theo. Didn't think this was your kind of spot."
He shrugged, taking a seat next to her. "Needed a break from the castle. It's too loud in there sometimes, even with only the early risers around."
They sat in silence for a moment, watching as the gentle breeze stirred the lake's surface. Lilith stole a glance at him, noticing the faintest of smiles as he stared out over the water, lost in thought.
After a while, Theodore spoke, breaking the silence. "Do you ever think about what might be in there?" He nodded toward the lake.
"Every time I come down here," she replied, grinning. "Some of it's imagination, but who's to say what's real and what isn't? I like to think there's a whole world down there, creatures we've never even heard of."
