Back then, everyone spoke the same lingo, same slang. Traveling east, they found a flat spot in Shinar and settled down.
They were like, "Let's make bricks, fire them up good." So, bricks were their stone, tar for mortar. "Let's build a city, with a sky-high tower to make us famous, so we don't just fade into obscurity."
God dropped by to see their city and tower project. And he was like, "Look at them, all speaking the same language, this is just the start. Now, nothing they plan will be out of reach. "Let's mix up their language, so they can't understand each other."
So, God spread them from there all over the world, and they stopped building the city. That's why it's called Babel—because God scrambled their communication there, and from there, he spread them across the globe.
Shem's timeline: 100 years old when Arphaxad was born, two years after the flood. After Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 more years, having more kids.
Arphaxad was 35 when he had Salah. After Salah, Arphaxad stuck around another 368 years.
Salah waited 30 years, then had Eber, starting his own fam. Post-Eber, Salah stuck around for another 403 years, adding more to the fam.
Eber was 34 when Peleg was born, keeping the fam legacy going. Eber, after dropping Peleg, lived another 430 years, the fam kept growing.
Peleg hit 30, then welcomed Reu into the world. After Reu, Peleg was around for 209 more years, keeping the family tree lush.
Reu was 32 when he started his dad chapter with Serug. Post-Serug, Reu had 207 more years, the fam vibes strong.
Serug waited 30 years, then had Nahor, expanding the squad. After Nahor, Serug chilled for another 200 years, fam kept expanding.
Nahor was 29 when he had Terah, adding another branch. After Terah, Nahor was around for 119 more years, fam didn't stop.
Terah hit 70 and had a trio: Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
Here's the Terah fam breakdown: Terah had Abram, Nahor, Haran; Haran had Lot. But Haran dipped early, left this world in Ur, the fam's OG spot. Abram and Nahor got hitched: Abram to Sarai, and Nahor to Milcah, Haran's kid. Plot twist: Sarai couldn't have kids.
Terah, leading the fam, including Abram, Lot, and Sarai, left Ur, aiming for Canaan but settled in Haran.
Terah clocked out at 205 years in Haran.
