Chapter 53.3.03
"I will investigate it thoroughly. Before that, I hope you can remain as cautious as you are now."
Sun Yuebai regarded An Shuting with a calm expression, a sign that he had temporarily accepted the younger man's words. He nodded slightly, then raised his hand and pulled down the bed curtain beside him. The sheer, goose yellow gauze fell, creating a hazy barrier between them.
An Shuting exhaled softly, feeling a wave of relief wash over him. He considered the situation for a moment before softly reminding, "We still have to leave as soon as possible. After all, this is my mother's bedroom."
"Don't worry. Even though it wasn't my intention, things have happened, and I will try my best to make up for it. I hope you don't mind too much." An Shuting was unable to see Sun Yuebai's expression through the gauze curtain, so he made another attempt to convey his sincerity.
"You leave first." Sun Yuebai shook his head, his demeanor inscrutable as he remained unresponsive to An Shuting's reassurances. As he spoke, his body swayed slightly, but his arms managed to support him just in time.
It was evident that maintaining that curled-up posture was uncomfortable for him, yet Sun Yuebai only pursed his lips, unwilling to shift.
"Then I'll take my leave first. If you want to avoid running into anyone, you can go through the back." An Shuting couldn't shake an inexplicable sense of unease as he observed Sun Yuebai's discomfort.
Ultimately, it was his fault that they found themselves in this predicament, and he felt compelled to offer another piece of advice. However, as soon as he spoke, he remembered that Sun Yuebai had been familiar with the An family for years; how could he not know the layout of the house?
Sun Yuebai hesitated at this, his gaze dropping to the floor in silence. He glanced at An Shuting once more. "Don't mention what happened today to anyone."
The statement served as both a reminder and a warning.
He delivered it lightly, but An Shuting understood the weight behind the words. Failing to heed that warning could lead to serious consequences. After spending enough time around Sun Yuebai, An Shuting had learned not to test the man's boundaries lightly.
He nodded solemnly in response, adding a heavy hum to signify his understanding, lest he falter under Sun Yuebai's penetrating gaze.
"It's not a big deal. Nothing will happen if you just keep your mouth shut." Sun Yuebai's voice rang out like jade striking stone-clearly a threat, yet somehow soothing in its delivery.
An Shuting took his words seriously, sensing an undercurrent of emotion from Sun Yuebai that he couldn't quite place.
An Shuting believed Sun Yuebai's calm demeanor was simply his nature, unaware that the man had deliberately slowed his speech to convey a sense of control. Sun Yuebai himself might not fully grasp the complexities of his own mentality in this moment.
"As you wish; I am, of course, willing to keep the secret for you." Behind the veil, both men felt a sense of security, though An Shuting was also eager to solidify his image as a secret admirer.
The gauzy curtain provided a veil of intimacy, and An Shuting couldn't help but feel his cheeks warm as he looked at the hazy silhouette of Sun Yuebai, who sat with an air of confidence that mirrored the elegance of a cypress tree.
"You know, if news of a rookie like you were to leak out, it wouldn't just be the outsiders who would react. Even the An family wouldn't let it slide. To me, though, it's just a flaw in my statement."
Sun Yuebai observed An Shuting with keen eyes, noting how his demeanor shifted from calm to slightly more animated with each word he spoke. The compliment had been delivered with a hint of mockery, yet An Shuting's charm managed to pierce through Sun Yuebai's stoicism.
