Chapter 103.4.16

Zhou Xiaobai lay on his side, gazing at An Shuting's back to ensure he was truly awake. An Shuting, usually sharp and decisive, was trying to cover up his mistake.

A smile curled on Zhou Xiaobai's lips as he slowly wrapped his arms around An Shuting from behind, settling in for a peaceful sleep.

By morning, An Shuting found himself confused, still sitting on the edge of the bed. He noticed clean clothes placed at the head of the bed and sat there in a daze for a while before heading out.

Outside, Zhou Xiaobai stood in the garden, his schoolbag slung over his shoulder, memorizing English words from a book. His fingers pinched the green cover of the book, and in that moment, it was hard to picture him as the same person who had been a bit of a troublemaker before.

"Brother, you're fine, let's go." Zhou Xiaobai flashed a shy smile, his clear eyes bright with that refreshing handsomeness.

An Shuting couldn't help but think that there was more to this innocent appearance than met the eye.

Strong-willed as he was, once An Shuting had decided on something, he would pursue it wholeheartedly. For the next several weeks, he practiced singing with Zhou Xiaobai every afternoon.

However, each night after turning off the lights, Zhou Xiaobai would find his way into his space, his behavior gradually becoming more excessive.

Just as An Shuting was about to confront him about it, the day of the cultural performance arrived.

Mother An, dressed in a soft yellow gown, looked around the auditorium, scanning the crowd.

"What's wrong?" Father An asked, noticing her distracted expression.

"It seems that Shengnan and his wife didn't come today," Mother An remarked. Knowing that their two children were performing, she had asked Mother Zhou to make sure she attended.

Perhaps it was her realization that Zhou Xiaobai seemed indifferent to the couple, something Mother An could not ignore.

She didn't want her friend to regret it later, but it seemed that her friend didn't share her concern.

Father An patted her shoulder. "Maybe they're busy. You know they always have a lot going on."

Mother An shook her head. "You don't understand."

Father An straightened up. "Let's talk about that later. Your son is about to perform. You'd better be careful, or he might blame you for not being a good audience."

The previous performance had been a lively magic show, and as the atmosphere in the auditorium settled, An Shuting and his group stepped onto the stage. The music's gentle prelude softened the air, and the audience quieted down.

Zhou Xiaobai, dressed in a crisp white suit, stood tall and graceful, his expression cool and composed. "Looking at you across the river, I miss you. The red beans in the south have already grown on the branches."

As his song came to an end, the delicate sound of a guqin played softly beneath his voice.

"Searching and searching, I often see the person in my dreams when I sleep."

"When I woke up from the dream, I was the only one left, leaning against the railing with tears in my eyes."

"This time the talented scholar has stopped, and that beautiful lady has come on stage again."

"He sang about their former love, and how the beautiful lady and the talented man on and off the stage had forgotten each other."

The music, full of emotion, accompanied Zhou Xiaobai's voice, which was clear yet slightly hoarse. He sang about the joy of meeting and the sorrow of parting, as though he were a centuries-old actor recounting a lost love. His performance radiated a deep sense of longing and regret, bringing the audience into his emotional world.
