Chapter 58.3.08

It was already late when An Shuting left Sun Yuebai. As he exited the courtyard, he felt a wave of relief at no longer having to deal with Sun Yuebai.

Bailu Academy covered a vast area, and fortunately, it was almost time for dinner. An Shuting followed groups of students walking in the same direction and easily found the dining hall. After paying, he collected his food.

The atmosphere in the dining hall reminded him of a university cafeteria, showcasing the distinctive culture of Bailu Academy. The academy's president emphasized "seeking truth without barriers and applying knowledge to the world" in academic pursuits. This philosophy encouraged diverse ideas and concepts to explore boldly, promoting a blend of perspectives. Practical application of knowledge was deemed essential, as the academy mandated that students handle everything themselves, forbidding them from bringing servants.

Everyone wore the same white Confucian robe, but An Shuting stood out in his flamboyant purple robe and white jade hair crown. His handsome figure and heroic demeanor set him apart in a place filled with talented individuals.

"Are you a new student? My name is He Zhizhou. Do you mind if I sit here?" he heard a voice ask while gnawing on a chicken leg.

Looking up, An Shuting saw a slightly plump student with a friendly smile standing next to his table. He nodded and gestured to the seat opposite him.

He Zhizhou sat down, bringing his food closer. His narrow eyes lit up with curiosity as he studied An Shuting.

After swallowing his food, An Shuting wiped his mouth with a handkerchief. "I just enrolled today. My name is An Shuting."

"It's Brother An. If you don't mind, just call me Zhizhou. I enjoy making friends, especially with those who are straightforward like you," He Zhizhou said, his enthusiasm evident.

"Are all the people in the academy like you?" An Shuting resumed eating, feeling the hunger he'd suppressed earlier surge now that food was finally in front of him.

While observing He Zhizhou, An Shuting noted that overly enthusiastic people often had ulterior motives.

"No, no, it's just my personality. Sorry if I'm embarrassing you," He Zhizhou said, his tone confirming An Shuting's impression of their similarity.

He Zhizhou's easygoing demeanor was refreshing compared to the moralistic attitudes of many classmates. An Shuting appreciated the chance to meet someone more relatable.

"Let me introduce our academy to you," He Zhizhou continued. "We have four main areas: the lecture hall and library in the north, a large bamboo forest where the teachers live to the east, and in the west, where we are now, the dining hall, medical hall, and granary."

"Each lecture hall has a lecturer, and every six months, students are reassigned based on their progress. Students choose their lecturers, and lecturers select their students, forming classes quickly."

"In your spare time, you can attend other classes too, but few people do that."

An Shuting nodded, recognizing the familiar structure. "Not bad. It's worthy of being Bailu Academy."

He Zhizhou beamed with pride at An Shuting's approval, appreciating the academy's unique philosophy and open learning environment.

"What I just described is the academy's layout. You'll learn more about it later."

"Students are categorized into three groups: those with excellent family backgrounds, usually children of officials; those with strong academic performance valued by teachers; and finally, those who are relatively unknown, like me."
