(younger)Chapter 112.5.01
Room 305, Xingfu Community.
An Shuting sat cross-legged on the sofa on the balcony, reading a book, when a knock on the door broke his concentration. At the same time, his phone buzzed with a reminder that the takeaway had arrived.
As he slipped on his shoes, An Shuting noticed the knocking pattern-a steady 1-2-3, 1-2-3. He chuckled at the delivery man's rhythm and called out, "I'm coming!"
"Here's your takeaway. Enjoy your meal." The words were spoken with an almost mechanical precision but carried a certain charm. The delivery man's face was mostly obscured by his helmet.
When An Shuting reached out to take the food, he couldn't help but glance at the man. His frown deepened when he noticed the delivery man's injured hand.
"Did something happen on the road? Your hand is hurt so badly-don't you feel any pain?"
The delivery man, Yu Bai, glanced at the injury nonchalantly. "It's just a minor injury. I'm fine."
An Shuting was skeptical. He had seen enough to know when someone was downplaying an injury. He wouldn't stand by and let anyone take their health so lightly.
"Come in," he said, stepping aside to allow the man in. "I'll bandage it for you."
Yu Bai hesitated but made no move to leave. An Shuting pulled him inside and added sternly, "Don't say it's minor. You've lost a lot of blood. It could be risky if you don't treat it. You don't want to end up wasting time and energy going to the hospital later, do you?"
Yu Bai, standing still as if dazed by the situation, glanced at his own arm, where An Shuting's hand rested. The warmth of the skin contact caught him off guard for a brief moment.
An Shuting guided him to the sofa, then went to the drawer under the coffee table for the first aid kit. He sat beside Yu Bai, skillfully disinfecting and applying medicine to the wound before bandaging it with practiced ease.
Yu Bai remained silent throughout the process. An Shuting, sensing his discomfort, spoke softly to ease the tension.
"Think positively," An Shuting said while carefully wrapping the bandage. "No matter how tough life gets, you can always get through it if you persevere."
He then pulled out a piece of candy from his pocket, its bright red wrapper gleaming in the light. "Here, take some candy. It's my niece's favorite. You could use a little sweetness. Things will get better."
Yu Bai glanced down at the candy in his hand, the bright red wrapper standing out starkly against the soiled bandages. The contrast seemed almost symbolic.
For a moment, he wondered if An Shuting knew the truth-that the blood on his hands had come from an AIDS patient. Would he still be so calm then?
The thought stirred something dark within Yu Bai. "What if the same thing happened to you?" he asked, his voice low. "Would you be so calm?"
An Shuting paused, his fingers still on the first aid kit as he considered the question. His eyes met Yu Bai's, a hint of concern flickering behind his calm exterior.
"There's nothing in this world that can't be changed except life and death," he said finally. "And sometimes, when you feel you can't get over something, it's because you're holding on too tight. Let go, and things might not seem so impossible."
Yu Bai looked at the takeout box in front of him, the food now forgotten, and a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. His voice, hoarse from whatever weighed heavily on him, spoke again.
