Chapter 24.1.24

An Shuting nodded, letting out a soft grunt as he tightened his grip around Sun Yuebai's waist. Although it had only been a short time, he was already accustomed to the moments of physical intimacy with this man.

Sun Yuebai leaned in closer, his face nearly touching An Shuting's. Despite the faint wrinkles at the corners of his long, narrow eyes, he remained stunningly beautiful.

An Shuting's heart raced as he felt Sun Yuebai drawing nearer.

Suddenly, Sun Yuebai halted, then burst into laughter, collapsing into An Shuting's arms.

"How can you be so gullible? If I were to be sad because of those insignificant people, my heart would have been shattered into pieces long ago."

A sense of pride welled up within him, even more satisfying than the thrill of receiving a large reward for his first performance on stage.

An Shuting pursed his lips but instinctively protected him with his hands. Seeing Sun Yuebai laugh so freely and happily made him smile in return.

"Well, being happy is the most important thing at all times."

Sun Yuebai, who had lived half his life without purpose, suddenly felt as if he were being pampered by his young lover. He reclined in An Shuting's embrace, his gaze falling on An Shuting's chiseled chin. "So, do you think I should leave the troupe? It's frustrating to feel this way all the time. I just want to live a good life with you now."

Sun Yuebai's master and fellow apprentices had to rely on themselves to support the troupe, but in their hearts, they would always remember the child who had been bullied that day. From time to time, they couldn't help but relive those memories, which only served to disgust themselves.

In the past, Sun Yuebai felt annoyed by it but didn't care much. Now, he realized that time was precious, and he wanted to spend it with the people he loved, rather than getting entangled with those who disgusted him.

The phrase "live a good life" left An Shuting momentarily blank. He lowered his head almost instinctively, surprised to find that Sun Yuebai was serious and not joking.

The words "love-struck" echoed in his mind.

Seeing a hint of longing on Sun Yuebai's pale face, An Shuting gently touched his forehead. If he didn't feel hot, then he was just being foolish. After a moment of contemplation, he asked, "This is the career you've been fighting for half your life. Are you really willing to give it up?"

Sun Yuebai had been devastated after leaving the opera troupe in his previous life. Hearing him say such words now made An Shuting think he must be crazy.

"Career? You mean singing opera?" Sun Yuebai laughed lightly. "It's just a means to make a living, and right now, I don't need to perform on stage to survive." The money he earned was more than enough to provide for their food and clothing for several lifetimes.

No matter how much praise he received, Sun Yuebai never forgot that his initial motivation for practicing so hard was to earn enough money to support himself. Thankfully, he had some talent and had managed to carve out a place for himself.

However, he had endured a great deal in the opera troupe, and the contempt he faced over the years could not be erased by the recent glory. Moreover, as long as he stayed in this line of work, the disdainful and vulgar gazes would never vanish.

An Shuting was genuinely puzzled after hearing Sun Yuebai's words. "So, you're not happy when you're performing on stage?" He had watched Sun Yuebai perform before, captivated by his charm and grace, like a star illuminating the night sky.

"It's fine. I can ensure that fans don't waste their tickets for every show I perform. But it's not about whether the fans like it or not," Sun Yuebai replied, his tone earnest.

Perhaps there were times he got lost in the characters' emotions, filled with loyalty and perseverance, but he remained grounded. Singing was something he excelled at and a way to earn a living.

Now that he had made enough money, he preferred a simple and stable life.

An Shuting could see the parallel to the lamentations of office workers in his previous life; he began to understand that the significance of the opera troupe held a different meaning for Sun Yuebai.

With that realization, An Shuting felt no need to persuade him further. "If you don't want to sing, then don't."

Sun Yuebai's eyes sparkled with surprise. Nothing was more joyful than knowing his lover understood him.

He sat up, retrieved a small box from a hidden compartment under the bed, and pushed a pile of cash and bills toward An Shuting.

"Let's open a clinic together. You're a great doctor, and I have the money and connections. We could definitely make a fortune if we start a clinic."

Perhaps feeling a bit too blunt, Sun Yuebai added with a hint of sentimentality, "This way, you can pursue your career and save lives, while I can realize my dream."

An Shuting held the stack of money in his hands, topped with a deed to a shop on Fenghuang Street. The sight was dazzling.

He felt a rush of happiness, amazed by the extravagant display of love from Sun Yuebai.

After collecting the scattered banknotes on the bed and placing them back in the box, he smiled. "I'm willing to listen to you, but what is your dream?"

Sun Yuebai curled his lips into a smile, picking up a stack of money between his fingers, the rustle of the banknotes filling the room.

"Of course, making a lot of money easily is my dream. I don't want to practice endlessly, worrying that I'll be replaced if I slip up. I want to avoid bending down and smiling for others, only to be humiliated behind my back. I want to earn a living without the burdens of my past."
