Chapter 105.4.18
Zhou Xiaobai stood up and gently pushed An Shuting aside. "Godmother, if something is bothering you, please just tell us. We'll help you find a solution. Don't be upset. We're all really concerned."
As he spoke, he pressed the orange into Mother An's hand, urging her to eat.
Mother An looked at Zhou Xiaobai, who appeared so clean and well-behaved. She hesitated, took a piece of the orange, and then set the rest down on the table.
"It's nothing," she said with a forced smile. "I just had a few words with your godfather. Don't overthink it."
Zhou Xiaobai poured her another glass of water and handed it to her. "Godmother, please try to rest early. Don't let anything make you angry. We're here for you."
Mother An's heart softened at his concern. She nodded, her expression softening. "You've had a long day, Xiaobai. You should get some rest too."
After comforting Mother An, Zhou Xiaobai and An Shuting returned to their room.
When Zhou Xiaobai finished washing up and came out of the bathroom in his pajamas, he ran into An Shuting, who was walking out holding a pillow.
As they passed each other, Zhou Xiaobai stepped aside to block An Shuting. "Brother, where are you going so late?"
Zhou Xiaobai was dressed casually, with his unbuttoned shirt revealing a hint of his toned chest.
"I'll sleep in the living room tonight," An Shuting replied, sidestepping Zhou Xiaobai as he headed for the door.
Zhou Xiaobai pursed his lips. He couldn't help but think that he had been a little too proud of himself recently.
The next morning, it was a rare weekend, and the rest of the family had not gotten up yet.
Zhou Xiaobai tiptoed into the yard with his English book. As he passed the sofa, he squatted down and tucked the blanket around An Shuting, who was still asleep.
He sat on the steps in the small garden, looking at the pale yellow sunrise, then turned his head to glance at the yard. Casually, he flipped through the vocabulary book in his hands.
Mother An came out with two cups of hot milk and sat down next to Zhou Xiaobai. "You work so hard."
Zhou Xiaobai turned around, surprised to see her. "Godmother?" He reached out to take the milk from her.
Mother An smiled at him and, after taking a sip of her own milk, asked, "Xiaobai, is there anything you're not used to here recently?"
Zhou Xiaobai shook his head, holding the cup with both hands. "Everything's fine."
The warmth of the milk transferred to his palms, reminding him of when he was younger. Back then, only his sister had this privilege. He'd always secretly coveted her milk, but his mother would tell him that boys should be hardworking and give way to their sisters.
Since living with the An family, his godmother had made sure both he and An Shuting drank milk daily, saying it would help them grow healthier and taller.
The An family was truly wonderful. An Shuting was a good person, and both of An's parents treated him like their own.
He took a sip of the slightly sweet milk and realized that its warmth and sweetness would stay with him forever.
"Godmother, I have something to tell you," Zhou Xiaobai said, cutting through the silence. He already knew what his godmother was about to ask.
Mother An paused, then nodded. "Go ahead."
