Chapter 45.2.15
Sun Yuebai reflected on the situation. He opened his eyes and hooked his arms around An Shuting's neck as they lay on the bed. Tilting his head, he raised his hand to touch An Shuting's lips. "You're really good at talking. Are you genuinely confused, or are you just pretending to be naive?"
"The emperor is wary of your family," An Shuting replied, gently grabbing Sun Yuebai's fingertips and kissing them. "His insistence on sending you to Jiangbei isn't just a scheme against Lian Yu. He might actually be pleased to see it unfold."
Sun Yuebai sighed, "What about the emperor's ill intentions? What of the imperial decree granting our marriage? Once we run away, it will no longer hold. My spies say my mother is preparing to cry, make a fuss, and threaten to hang herself. I can't bear that."
Seeing the determined glint in An Shuting's eyes, Sun Yuebai shook his head. "Didn't you say that people who instigate elopements are not good? I've been forced to stay away from the capital for most of my life, and now I don't want to be a coward."
He lay flat on the bed, staring at the ceiling, one hand resting unconsciously on his stomach. A small life had already taken root there. An Shuting's unexpected medical skills had helped improve Sun Yuebai's health through nourishing meals, and he understood well how rare this was.
Sun Yuebai had discovered this little life while taking the baby's pulse. Panic washed over him when he confirmed it multiple times; he was indeed pregnant. The idea of a man carrying a child was bewildering, turning the world upside down. The old emperor's mocking words echoed in his mind, and Sun Yuebai's first reaction had been to secretly terminate the pregnancy before anyone noticed.
Avoiding An Shuting, who was knowledgeable in medicine and deeply cared for him, had proven difficult, yet he had sought several opportunities. Ultimately, he could not bring himself to let go. This child was theirs-conceived through love, despite the world's inability to accept it and the potential disdain from their fathers.
An Shuting's suggestion of eloping briefly seemed like a good way to escape intrigue. But Sun Yuebai questioned if he would condemn their child to a life of hiding, of being rootless and perhaps even having an unknown biological mother.
He was unwilling to see their child deprived of a noble status and the right to live freely, deserving of respect and love from both fathers. As for An Shuting, he couldn't bear to see him live in obscurity because of him. An Shuting had never known hardship, and Sun Yuebai feared the day he might regret his choice.
The room fell silent for a moment before An Shuting sighed. He understood Sun Yuebai's dilemma but felt a pang of disappointment at his refusal.
Half-laying down, An Shuting smiled softly at Sun Yuebai's peaceful expression. "I just plan to elope for a little while. It's not as if I'll never come back. If you don't want to go, I'll leave first and return once the storm has passed."
Sun Yuebai was lost in thought. At An Shuting's words, he turned to him, his sharp eyes scrutinizing his expression. After a long pause, he replied, "If you're going to leave early and skip the bandit suppression, then do it. Just take more people and stay safe."
An Shuting blinked, moving to lie atop Sun Yuebai, but Sun Yuebai shifted away.
"They say beauty fades quickly, and a man's heart changes easily. Have you changed your mind so fast?" An Shuting pressed, noting how Sun Yuebai hadn't been as clingy lately, especially today, when he mentioned running away.
Sun Yuebai covered his mouth with a hand. "You wanted to run away; why blame me? Why don't you just stay? Your mother is crying, making a scene, and even threatening to hang herself. Why not join in? You're powerful; who could stop you?"
