It had been about three weeks since school started. I was settling in, and we were actually starting to learn stuff in our classes. (Boo.) Dance season had started, Volleyball had started, and when there wasn't a volleyball game on Fridays there was usually a football game. The busy season of early fall had begun once more. Every day there was new drama, albeit it was mostly mild at this point. I helped my friends navigate their own love lives while still debating what to do with mine.

I remember it vividly. It was a Friday, the first football game of the season. I didn't have volleyball that night, so my friends and I decided to go together. That particular Friday was an A day, which meant fitness class flew by, world history dragged on, I blinked, and lunch was over. Then I was sitting in my algebra classroom. My algebra 2 teacher Mrs. Mayer is nice, but she likes to put is in random groups and have us do work at the board. Dreadful, I know. That day I was placed into a group with two boys. Nick, who I already knew, and Sabatino. The moment I was placed into a group with Sabatino, my life went from interesting to VERY interesting.

Every day Mrs. Mayer gave us one icebreaker to share with our group before we started working on problems.

"Okay, everyone say your names and, hmm...tell your group what kind of car you want in the future."

I could tell Sabatino's interest was piqued when I answered "BWM e36".

I suppose I can thank my pre-9th grade car obsession for that.

He went on to ask me how I knew so much about cars, he started rambling about what kind of BMW's he owned, etc. After that I really enjoyed working with that group. Nick and Sabatino were an interesting pair. It also felt nice to be treated like an actual human being by popular boys for once.  All the while I was working at the board, I couldn't help but notice how good Sabatino's cologne smelled as he looked over my shoulder.

Damn you, Jean Paul.

Damn you.

I took an interest in him after that, although not romantic one. Surprisingly. My thought process at the time was, "He could be friends with Haris, being that they're both Bosnian, and if I become friends with him, I can get closer to Haris that way!"

Oh, how blissful ignorance is.

After I got home from school that day the first thing I did was add him on Instagram and snapchat. He followed me back almost immediately, I remember showing my friends at the football game. Later that night he added me back on snap and we had a conversation. It went like this:

"Hey" (Sabatino)

"Hi" (Me)

"I'm sorry how did you get my snap and do I know you bro not tryna be rude"

"Nah, it's ok. Idk you're in my algebra. You can un-add me if you want"

"That really sums it up einstein, and nahhh"

"Is this Avery? From school?"

"Lol yeah"

"Ohhh ok ok srry. Wyd?"

"Lol it's no problem. Just chillin"

"True"

"U went to the football game?"

(I knew he had, I was stalking him)

"Yessir. You go?"

"Yup same"

We then continued to talk about the football game, and somehow the topic of conversation was switched to cars. He then told me goodbye by saying:

"Ima go smoke and then go to sleep twin ttyl"
