Jacob's POV

After Ellana told us everything about what Joseph said I left and made my way to his church, the last thing I wanted to do was make him wait.

I arrived to the church and got out of my truck. I made my way to the door, passing Peggie's while they rambled on about The Father 'god I'm fucking sick of hearing about The Father'.

I reached the doors and paused, taking a deep breath and trying to mentally prepare myself for what may happen when I walk through those doors, will I die? Will Joseph die?

I shook away the nerves and reached for the handles, swinging the double doors open.

When I entered I looked around, there was no one inside, except for Joseph, who was knelt down on his knees, praying.

I walked to the front of the church where Joseph was. I didn't want to give him any reason to believe I was lying, so I did my best to act normal.

"Brother" I spoke loudly, but not loud enough to where it seemed like I was yelling "brother what is the meaning of this?".

Joseph stood from his spot and slowly turned around "Hello Jacob" he spoke eerily.
I crossed my arms "I got your message, it seems you've lost faith in me Joseph".

Joseph walked over to one of the church pews and motioned for me to sit down, so I did. Once I had sat, Joseph had begun to speak "God is watching us... and He will judge you on what you choose in this moment and I believe you are keeping something from me Jacob, I want to know what it is".

"I'm not keeping anything from you, and I have given you no reason to believe that. I have been nothing but loyal to you and loyal to Eden's Gate" I replied immediately.

"Who is she Jacob?" He spoke back without breaking eye contact. "John and I were patrolling some of the roads through the mountains and we found her, I don't know who she is but I know she killed 3 resistance members and survived, I want to train her, I think she would make a good soldier" I hoped my lie would be enough.

Joseph smiled slightly "why do you keep her under guard? What are you protecting her from? The resistance?".

I leaned back against the pew "I'm not protecting her, I'm making sure she joins Eden's Gate, whether she wants to or not, she will be a soldier".

Joseph reached his hand out and placed it on the back of my neck, pulling my forehead to his "God has told me of a snake in our garden Jacob, I was afraid it was you" he pulled his head back and stared into my eyes "but now I see I was wrong".

Joseph stood, pulling me up with him " I wish to see you and the rest of our family at my sermon Sunday, it's been too long since our flock has seen us together, they may start to question our loyalty to one another"

I gave him a nod to let him know I would be there "if there's nothing else you need, I'm gonna head back to The Center, there's some new recruits I need to train"

Joseph nodded and pulled me into a hug, we said our goodbyes and I headed for the door.

Before I reached the door Joseph called out to me "I hope I'm making the right decision to place my faith in you brother"

As soon as I got outside it felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulder "I can't believe that actually worked" I whispered to myself has I hurried to my truck. I didn't want to stick around any longer than I had to, just in case Joseph decided I was lying after all.

Ellana's POV

John decided to stick around and keep me company while we waited for word from Jacob.

John asked me a for a few more details about when I was attacked, I told him everything I could remember. He also told me that he was the one who found me.

"John, can I ask you something?" I asked, taking a sip from my water. "Of course you can Ellana, what can I do for you?" He replied.

I took a moment to think of exactly how I wanted to ask my question "after I escaped your bunker, Jacob had found where I lived and he filled me in on everything you guys were planning, he had also told me what Joseph did to you. So I guess my question is why did Joseph do that? What did you do that was so awful, that he was willing to kill you?".

John stared at me for a moment, before interlocking his fingers and leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees "I've been in Hope County for almost 2 years, and for almost the entirety of the first year, everything was fine, there was no violence, no resistance, people joined our cause because they believed, and I mean truly believed".

I listened carefully to what he was saying. "Well after about being here for about 7 or 8 months, I met someone, she wasn't apart of Eden's Gate, she lived in Falls End. She was sweet, beautiful and full of life, and I fell for her. Her name was Sarah. Her and I were in love Ellana, but then things changed, she got pregnant and I was so happy, happy that I had a chance to be a better father than what we had growing up, I was so excited. She told me she wanted to leave not just Hope County, but Montana completely, she had a bad feeling about the direction the cult was heading in, and after talking it over with her, we agreed it would be best for our baby. I made an awful decision that day, to tell Joseph, about the pregnancy and about leaving. He didn't take it well." He continued.

Tears started to form in his eyes as he went on with the story "he went on a rampage, he killed Sarah, he killed our child and then he tried to kill me. We were going to get married ya know, before she had the baby we were going to elope. Faith found me and got me help, Joseph told me that I survived because god had a plan for me, that I was meant to walk through Eden's Gate after the collapse with my family, my true family as he called it. That was the last day I considered Joseph apart of that family".

John wiped the tears from his eyes and let out a breath, it was only then that I realized I had tears running down my cheeks. I reached my hand out and placed it atop his "I'm so sorry John, no one should ever have to go through that, especially from their brother. I'm glad Jacob and Faith are there for you, and I promise you, Joseph will pay for everything he has done".

John gave me a weak smile "that reminds me actually, the reason I came to your home yesterday was because I had thought about how at the party when we were chatting, you told my about your mom and sister and how you figured your sister had no memory of you. Well I wanted to offer my services, being a lawyer means I have many extremely helpful contacts, and well I figured as a way to thank you for helping my family, I could try to find yours"

he must have saw the shock on my face because he spoke up again "but if you don't want me to I understand, it's your decision"

I thought about it for a long minute before answering "I don't care about my mother John, she chose to abandon me, to abandon my father, but my sister? I would be forever grateful if you could reunite us" he smiled at my response "it would by honor".

We spent some time chatting, he told me about his life in Georgia, and I told him about the places I had seen while serving. John wasn't a bad person, none of them were, which I had figured that out a while ago, but as I got to know them even more I had started to learn how damaged and hurt they were. I wanted, now more than ever, to help them be happy again and away from the fear Joseph instilled in them.

It wasn't long until Jacob returned, maybe 2 hours or so. Jacob filled us in on everything that happened at Joseph's Compound, thankfully he believes Jacob is trying to turn me into a soldier.

Jacob told John that they were all expected at the church Sunday, which John disliked but knew he didn't have a choice.

They both hung around and kept me company for the rest of the day before deciding to go back to their respective regions.

That's how everyday for the next week went. One day Jacob would be here, the next day John would, and then Faith. Nick and Kim had also come to see me, and Sharky had shown up with Hurk as well.

I was thankful to see them all, but it was the longest week of my life.
