Wu and Bennett stood in an empty field, letting dandelion seeds float by as a gentle breeze gave the wind a gentle whistle.
Wu stood in a martial arts stance with his eyes closed, while Bennet stood in front of him, trying his best to emulate it. Wu made slow, deliberate movements. Shifting between different forms, each having a purpose. Bennett had trouble finding these inherent meanings, but eagerly aped Wu's stances. Little by little, he was able to see it. Raising a forearm to block, throwing a straight, compact fist, shooting a palm out to catch an opponent's limb before they could strike with full force.
"Mr. Wu, when do we get to the flying, and energy blasts, and superhuman strength and speed?" Bennet asked, his patience running a little thin.
"You say that again, and we'll go back to dodging practice." Wu said, and Bennet flinched. He'd barely lasted nine hours before keeling over, and Wu was forced to spare him for the day.
Bennet sighed, and continued flowing from one kata to the other, going through the motions.
"Imagine the flow of the energy in your body. As one part grows soft to move, the other stiffens to facilitate that motion. Everything that you perceive in the world is simply the reactions and translations of these principles." Wu said, shifting to another form.
"So everything is made of magic?" Bennet said.
"Physics, Benny. Physics." Wu said. "Energy, motion, force, momentum, and whatnot. These core principles apply to everything." Wu explained.
"Ki control and martial arts go hand in hand. They both center on strengthening the body, mind and spirit, and elevating it beyond what it was before. With both, you can gain unimaginable power, and reach heights you never could have dreamed of. To master these is to master oneself. To gain the ability to seize your world and fate with your own bare hands. For true masters, nothing is impossible."
Wu said.
...
"Are you a master?" Bennett said.
...
...
...
"No." Wu said. "Hell no..." Wu almost chuckled. "Very far from it." He admitted. "But I'm a hell of a lot stronger than I ever could have been if I didn't take this path." He said, smiling.
"...So eventually I'll be able to fly...?"
"Benny."
"Sorry!"
----------
A while after, Wu led Bennett through what the young Adventurer called "Wolvendom".
"You should just head back, dude." Wu said.
"No! I want to follow my master through every trial he comes across!" Bennett said excitedly.
"Judging from the ki signature in the center of this place, you really don't." Wu said, sensing something that felt stronger than anything he'd seen as of now. "I'm serious, whatever's in there is dangerous." Wu said.
"Are you gonna pick a fight with it?" Bennett asked.
"No. Real warriors never go around starting fights for no reason." Wu said.
...
"Buuut if you just so happen to get attacked first, then it's free game." Wu smirked, continuing his advance into the thick forest.
Wu suddenly paused.
"Something's rapidly approaching." Wu said.
"Huh!? What is it!?" Bennett said, his bravado immediately killed as he shuffled closer to Wu, taking a very ugly fighting stance.
