RUDRAKSH'S POV
“Are you ready?” I’d whispered to Shivani, squeezing her hand reassuringly. She’d nodded, taking a deep breath before looking at my parents, her cheeks flushed with anticipation. “There’s something we need to tell you all,” she’d begun, her voice wavering slightly.
My mother had looked up from her tea, instantly alert, her eyes bright with curiosity. “What is it, beta?” Shivani’s fingers had tightened around mine as she looked at my mom. “We’re… we’re going to have a baby,” she’d said, a soft smile spreading across her face as she said the words out loud.
For a second, there was complete silence, as if everyone was processing what she’d just said. Then, everything burst into motion at once. Maa's face broke into a radiant smile, and she’d immediately enveloped Shivani in a tight hug, tears streaming down her cheeks. Papa's normally reserved demeanor crumbled as he hugged me, his voice thick with emotion. “Congratulations, beta. You’re going to be a father.”
Aditi practically squealed, jumping up and down in excitement before embracing Shivani, while my Aarav clapped me on the back with a grin and rushed towards her to hug her. Chachi kissed Shivani's forehead as her eyes shone with unshed tears. And Dadaji run his hand on both our heads.
Present:
Shivani sniffles, "I love them you know that right?" I smile softly at her, "of course I know that. They’re just looking out for you, baby. They’re excited." I kiss her hair. "I feel like I am made out of glass." I supress a chuckle. She's tired of being the center of attention, Every time she so much as stood up, there was someone there, ready to hold her hand, offer her a seat, or check if she needed anything. It was heartwarming to see initially, but now, months later, I’m not sure Shivani is feeling quite the same way.
"Did you know Maa nearly tripped over herself yesterday just to bring me a glass of water.” She huffs. Oh god, my wife is very beautiful but right now, especially when her hormones are working and she's shouting or screaming at me for no apparent reason, she's the most adorable person I know. May call me crazy but I like it.
"It's all your fault." She crosses her hand and frowns, I bite my lips to stop the laugh bubbling in me, "you're right baby, I am sorry for everything." I say kissing her lips slowly. One thing I have learnt in 2 years of our marriage is that never say no to your wife and never let her apologize for anything. It's true when people say happy wife happy life. And it doesn't take much to make her happy, I brought a piece of chocolate cake from the office party and she was so happy, everytime she took a bite her shoulders would do a dance, it's so simple I don't understand why people complain, being married is the best thing that has happened to me.
"Do you think I am a burden? Do they think that I can't take care of myself?" She looks up at me, uncertainty visible in her eyes. The therapy is doing good for her self esteem but every once in a while this question does pop up and I am going to answer her honestly every single time untill she believes me. "No you are and never will be a burden on me Or this family. They love you and so do I. They just want to make sure you’re taken care of. And they know I’m around, but sometimes they just can’t help themselves. They’re excited, and this is their way of showing it.” I peck her nose, "and everyone here knows you can take care of yourself but they're your family too right. Why did you stay awake the entire night when Chachi had high fever? Or why do you make sugar free mithai for Dadaji? Because you love them not because they can't take care of themselves or you think of them as a burden right?" I cock an eyebrow, "right" She nods.
"But," I whisper in her ear, "if you ever need a break, just say the word. We’ll go somewhere, just the two of us. Deal?” I smile at her. She smiles, a genuine, relieved smile. “Deal.”
