(Dex pov)
Dex tweaked the gadget he was working on. It had been sparking when he tested it earlier. It was supposed to make a big flash of light and smoke, but all it was doing was shooting sparks.
He sighed and placed his screwdriver down. He pushed the goggles up on his head, needing to take a break. It felt like he'd been going cross-eyed
The chair squeaked as he got up from his desk. He was about to start to the door when he heard sizzles. He turned back around to see the gadget smoking. But not the way it wad supposed to.
Dex sprinted over to it. Her tried to ask it what the problem was, but the language was too jumbled to understand it.
A sharp, ear piercing whine was emitted from the gadget. Ok, it was time to run.
He never got a chance.
The gadget exploded, leaving fire in its wake.
Dex got tossed back. Hus cape ended up on fire, but when he tried to tear it off he found his hands practically a crisp. He hadn't even noticed before. Did it burn his nerves?
He felt up to his face where he felt pain. His fingers didn't feel anything, but they bumped up against his skin. Or rather, what was left of it. He didn't want to know what the sagging, gooey, burnt flesh looked like.
The smell was wretched enough. It smelled like the meat Sophie had in the Forbidden Cities mixed with putridly sweet sugar.
The stench was carried by the thick, darn gray smoke. It choked his lungs and made him dizzy. He cried out for help, but it came out like a croak.
The pain started to subside as his brain grew hazy. It wasn't so bad. He could get used to it. It made him feel like floating on top of a cloud. If he could just stay in it forever...
(Sophie pov)
The first thing Sophie noticed when she walked up the hallway to Dex's lab was the smell reminiscent of sweet barbecue beef jerky.
That... was unique. She assumed it was weird concoction Dex was cooking up.
The handle when she reached out was unnaturally warm. She opened it to be battered with a wall of smoke. Coughing, she stepped into the room to see fire.
Where was Dex? Shouldn't he be keeping this contained?
She pressed the emergency sprinkler system that had been installed to extinguish the flames.
When the job had been done, she carefully poked her head in the room. She stopped in her tracks when she saw a blackened figure on the ground. Her heart sank.
Upon further investigation, she gagged. It was.... Dex. Or at least what she assumed was him.
The skin on his face had... melted. It made a hole in his face, exposing his teeth, jaw, and the pink goo that was his gums.
She bemt down beside him. She tried to pick him up, but he was too hot to handle.
The skin on his hands and arms were blackened. Bone was exposed.
She shook him to wake him up. He was just asleep, right? He had tk be asleep!
The smoke wasn't the only thing choking her throat as she hailed Elwin, informing him of the emergency about her best friend.
