MAVIS
after a year

The air was thick with celebration at Enderun’s auditorium as the graduation ceremony wrapped up.

Laughter and cheers echoed as families and friends posed for photos, some already planning their after-parties.

That bet, the game. The realization, the friendship and feelings she made me feel, the reason I've changed. It was her.

I never knew na sa kalokohan ko ako makakatagpo ng babaeng magpapabago sa isang tulad ko.

The love that blossomed between us, the genuity, hindi ko maisip na hahantong ako rito dahil sa kanya.

Wearing her graduation gown, she stood near the garden outside the auditorium, laughing with her friends.

Her smile was radiant, but there was something wistful in her expression, like she was savoring every moment before it slipped away.

I took a deep breath, my heartbeat drumming in my ears.

This was it—the moment I’d been waiting for. Months of teasing, bantering, misunderstandings, and endless moments that blurred the lines between friendship and something more.

Today wasn’t just about celebrating our achievements. It was the day I would finally lay my heart bare.

As I walked toward her, the noise around me faded, replaced by the rhythmic pounding of my footsteps and the soft rustling of leaves.

She turned just as I reached her, her laughter fading into a soft smile when she saw me.

“Mavis" She greeted, her voice warm and familiar. “Congratulations.”

“Congratulations din, Ashi,” I replied, my voice quieter than usual. “Pwede ba kitang makausap… alone?”

Her eyebrows rose slightly in surprise, but she nodded. “Of course.”

We walked to a quieter corner of the garden, the late afternoon sun casting a golden glow around us.

The soft hum of distant chatter created a cocoon of intimacy, as if the world had paused for this moment.

I turned to face her, my hands nervously clutching my graduation cap. “Ashi, alam kong marami na tayong pinagdaanan—lahat ng tawanan, away, at mga kalokohan ng mga kaibigan natin. Pero sa likod ng lahat ng yun, ikaw lang talaga ang dahilan kung bakit mas naging makulay ang buhay ko.”

Her eyes softened, but she said nothing, letting me continue.

“Hindi ko na kayang itago, nung una ayos lang sa akin kung hanggang dito muna tayo but Ashi— mahal kita at mas kitang minahal at minamahal pa. Matagal na. At kung bibigyan mo ako ng pagkakataon, gusto kong masimulan natin ang bagong kabanata ng buhay natin—ng magkasama”

Her lips parted slightly, her expression unreadable.

For a moment, I feared she would laugh it off like one of our usual banters, but instead, she stepped closer, her voice trembling with emotion.

"I've known you for so long Mavs, hindi man maganda ang naging simula natin, as time went by unti unti kitang minahal din because you showed me the real you. Mahal din kita.”

The weight in my chest lifted, replaced by an overwhelming surge of joy.

I laughed softly, partly in disbelief and partly because I didn’t know how else to release the emotions threatening to spill over.

“Talaga?” I asked, grinning like an idiot.

She laughed, wiping at her eyes. “Oo, buang. Seryoso ako.”

I reached for her hand, intertwining our fingers. “Can I ask you now?" I asked as she giggled and nod, knowing what I meant.

"Ashianna Quinn, sa ngalan ng toga at diplomang hawak ko, will you be my girlfriend?”  I smiled

She nodded, her smile bright enough to rival the setting sun. “Oo, Mavis. Girlfriend mo na ako.”

Without thinking, I pulled her into a tight hug, holding her like she was the most precious thing in the world.

She buried her face in my shoulder, and for a moment, we simply existed in each other’s arms, the rest of the world fading away.

epilogue

It’s been two years since that day in the garden, and every moment since has felt like a dream. Ashi and I grew together, weathering life’s storms and celebrating its victories.

Today, we’re back at Enderun, standing under the same tree where we became a couple.

This time, though, I’m holding something far more important than my graduation cap—a small velvet box.

As she turns to me, her laughter still as melodic as it was that day, I kneel on one knee, holding the ring out to her.

“Ashi, ikaw ang pinakamagandang bahagi ng buhay ko. Hindi ko alam kung paano ko nagawa ang lahat kung wala ka. Will you marry me?”

Tears spill from her eyes as she nods, her smile brighter than ever. “Oo, Mavis. A million times, yes.”

The crowd of friends and family who had been hiding nearby erupts in cheers, but for me, it’s just her—always her.

And as I slip the ring onto her finger, I know this is the real beginning of our forever.

“Walang katapusang kabanata” I whisper as I pull her into a kiss, sealing our promise. “Simula pa lang ito. So be ready mahal ko, may action pa tayo" Pagbibiro ko.

"Kung ibalik ko kaya sa iyo itong singsing mo?" She sweetly smiled

"Iyon ay kung kaya mo" I countered, kissing her in a quick peck.

Napa iling siya "Palibhasa you know how to get me na, pasalamat ka at mahal kita" She replied.

"Nagsisisi ka na ba?" I quirked

"I hate that I love you nga hindi ba?" She's blushing as she tried to sound cool.

I chuckled when she hit me in my chest playfully, yet snuggling more with my warmth.

And the feeling? It's all what I wanted.

In our story, many people said that we're enemies to lovers troupe but for me;

we're enemies and lovers.

This isn’t the end of our story—it’s just the next page of the life we’ll write together.

end.
