Aiden

The air in Durinel Village's underground alley was oppressive, with the weak light hardly piercing through the thick shadows. We had gone far and descended deeper into the convoluted passages of this ancient area, seeking to discover the shortest path to the Garden of Untold. The aim was simple: avoid the Path Slayers and any other threats-but every step felt like we were wading through an ocean of inevitability. The tension was palpable, and we could all feel the weight of what was to come.

As we proceeded, the topic between Athena and me shifted back to something more personal.

''Tell me about your past, Aiden.'' Athena asked, her voice calm but searching, as if she could feel the tempest swirling behind my eyes. ''Despite your experiences, you maintain a serene demeanor. How do you do that?''

I looked at Louisito, who was walking a few paces ahead, his eyes scanning the dark path with distrust. He didn't seem to be paying attention, but it felt like a good time to open up, to talk about the events that turned me into the person I am today.

''I wasn't always... like this.'' I began slowly, my words laden with recollections I hadn't expressed in years. ''I was not raised like the majority of the others in Luminara. Nana Babaylan-Viraesca Moonshadow-of the Coven of the Wyrd took care of me. She found me when I was still a baby. I don't remember much from that time, but I know she cared for me and taught me what it meant to be a witch."

Athena paused for a while, her face frozen in shock. ''Wait. 'Viraesca Moonshadow'?'' Her voice wavered, as if she couldn't believe what she was hearing. "THE 'Viraesca'?!"

I nodded, watching the shadows move over the alley walls. "Yeah. I had no idea who she really was when I was growing up. She never mentioned her fame, or the fact that she was one of the most powerful witches in all of Lyrosia. She raised me like any grandmother would-until everything started to change.''

Athena stood frozen for a moment, contemplating what I had spoken. The air surrounding us became thicker, and the silence got deeper. She shook her head, a smile playing on her lips.

"I had no idea. If I had known, I would have asked you so many questions." She chuckled softly. "I've always heard rumors about her. She was regarded as the The Curse-bearer, Dark Arts weaver herself. But... I never imagined you'd be... connected to her.''

I sighed, my gaze tracing the cracks in the stone wall. "Neither did I. It wasn't until recently, when everything began to unravel with my abilities, that I learned who she was. She's my family, a guide, and now... I'm beginning to realize why I've always been pulled to magic like this.''

"It's fate, Aiden.'' Athena murmured, her tone softening as if the weight of her own words hit home. She smiled, slightly wistful. "You're not just a bystander in this world; you have a role to play, just like the rest of us.''

I glanced at her, shocked by the depth of her comments, perhaps she was right, that there was more to my existence than I had ever known, the past wasn't something to escape from, but something to learn from and build on.

I felt determined to turn the topic around and ask her the same question. "How about you, Athena?"" I asked, my tone was light but intrigued. ''What is your past? You've always seemed like... composed. But I am confident there is more to you than this particular purpose.''

Athena paused, and I thought I saw a dark flicker pass across her face. She opened her mouth to speak, but a sharp, odd scraping noise against the stone floor interrupted her.

All of us froze.

Louisito was unprepared and Athena's gaze shifted from me to the shadowy end of the alley. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand on the edge.
