Once, in a sleepy little town in Winter River, Connecticut we meet Barbara and Adam Maitland, a couple who have chosen to take a vacation by staying at home decorating their large country home. A giant daddy longlegs spider is seen crawling on top of it. Adam then grabs it, revealing that we were seeing a model replica of the town while we're in the house of Adam and Barbara Maitland. Harry Belafonte's "Sweetheart from Venezuela" is playing in the background.

"Well, well, you're a big fella", said Adam. "That's a big fella! Whoa!" He walks over to a window and gently, until Barbara comes in to see him. "Looks great", said Barbara."Thank you", said Adam. "Happy vacation, honey", said Barbara as she hands over him a gift. Adam opens the gift. "Manchurian tung oil. Where you get this?" asked Adam. "Helen got it for me in Oslo", said Barbara. "Well, there's enough to do the whole table and the bureau", said Adam then gives his wife a gift. "Wonder what this could be", said Barbara as she opens the gift. Revealing its wallpaper. "Oh, honey, you got it. Thank you." Barbara hugs Adam. "Enough to do the entire guest room", said Adam. "So clever we're spending our vacation at home. I'm gonna get started right away", said Barbara. "Hey, where are you going?" asked Adam.

Suddenly the telephone rang. "I'll get it", said Barbara. "Be my guest", said Adam. A car honks outside the house. Barbara: looks out the window and then she said to Adam, "Jane." "It's your turn, honey", said Adam. They both run downstairs, and Barbara answers the door. It was Jane Butterfield who tries to entice them to sell the house, since it seems too big for just a couple.

"Hi, Barbara", said Jane. "Hi", said Barbara. "I'm glad I caught ya. Heard you were on a vacation", said Jane. "That's right, Jane. Complete vacation", said Barbara. "Honey, today I'm $260,000!" exclaimed Jane. "It's 6:45 AM in the morning", said Barbara. "This offer is real. From a man in New York City who only saw a photograph", said Jane. "Jane, don't send people photos of our house", said Barbara. "He wants to bring the wife and family for some peace...and quiet", said Jane. "That's exactly what we're looking for", said Barbara. "But Barbara, this house is too big for you. It really ought to be a couple with a family, you know? Oh, pumpkin, I didn't mean it. I mean this house is too big", said Jane. "I'll see you in a few weeks. Okay?" said Barbara. "Okay", said Jane.

Harry Belafonte's "When a Man Loves a Woman" plays on the radio when Adam spots Jane by the window. "Boo! I was just telling Barbara the offer about this house", said Jane. "No, Jane", said Adam. He closes the window shade and turns off the music on his radio. "Barbara, come with me down to the store", called Adam. "What for?" asked Barbara? "I need a new brush for this tung oil and I wanna get a part for the model", said Adam. "Or you could just run in, okay?" said Barbara.
