Zoë
My 5 AM alarm blares through the room, followed by groaning sounds from the woman beside me. Though the last thing I want is to get out of bed, I have to get my day started and reach over to the bedside table to turn it off.
Immediately, Sam rolls on top of me and buries her face into my neck, the same way she has done every morning this week. "Tell Robert Parks that I will fund a new hospital wing if you never have a morning shift again."
With a slight laugh, I begin peeling her arms off my still naked body. "Baby, I really need to wake up."
By the dim lights of the closet, I can see her bright eyes shoot open before she rolls over and pins me to the bed beneath her. "Let me help with that."
I knew that this would happen, Sam has become insatiable, and I have made a habit of budgeting extra time before work. Not that she is entirely to blame—this is better than any cup of coffee I've ever had.
After a much-needed shower, I find Sam in the kitchen with coffee, the morning paper, and naked as always. "Correct me if I am wrong, but according to my record, your shift will not begin before three this afternoon. Where do you need to be at this ungodly hour?"
Our talk in the car two weeks ago came with a few rules that she also implemented. These included that I need to start a dedicated course on self-defense. I'm not particularly thrilled about this, but Addy assured me that Lawrence made her go through the exact same thing before their wedding.
I grasp the mug she hands me and take a silent moment to feel the warmth. A slight moan escapes my throat as the heat spreads through my entire body.
As my eyes open, I find her staring at me with dark eyes. I know that look, and if I don't do something fast, I won't leave here within the next hour.
"I have training with Addy, remember?"
Sam frowns at the mention of her name before turning back to her paper. "You know I don't plan on getting involved, but forgiveness doesn't always have to be given for the sake of the one who has done wrong. Sometimes everyone can benefit from letting go of a bit of anger, especially you."
Her eyebrow cocks up with a smirk as I kiss her cheek. "Those are some wise words, Dr. DeLuca, but I see no point in forgiving her. The one thing I have proven is that I never needed Addy to control my life."
We both know that's not true, if anything, it has become even clearer to me how much she misses Addy, but I find it best not to comment on that. Sure, she can function, but professionally, Addy balances her out. Unfortunately Sam will always be too stubborn for words to convince her, so I'll watch everything play out from a distance.
Soon the five-minute warning from Jonas comes in through my phone, causing me to quickly chug the last bit of my coffee. "Will you be back before midnight?" She turns to me with a sudden pout that she tries hiding.
"Not tonight. I have twins coming out of surgery, and I plan on watching over them."
Her eyes darken with a grin. "So if they die on the table, you will be back on time?"
"SAM!"
With laughter, she runs into the bedroom, locking the door behind her.
Sam
All three of my cousins flinch as my whiskey glass makes contact with the marble floor. "For over a month, we have been searching, and our last lead pans out to nothing!"
Shivering Derek and Michael stare at their brother in hopes he can distract me before my rage comes to a boiling point.
"There has to be something we haven't tried, a stone we haven't turned yet." My eyes snap to my eldest cousin, all the more irritated by his calm demeanor. Does he even care? Do any of them?
