Nightmares of last October weren't new, but that didn't make them less terrifying for the first few moments of consciousness.
Her heavy breathing took a toll on her weathered heart, each beat erratic as it sent pangs of pain through her chest, making her breathless.
But eventually, due to having plenty of experience waking up like this, Hitomi knew how to rein it in. The rhythm of the inhales and exhales slowed, until the panic attack's death grip loosened.
The groggy girl heaved a guttural sigh as she fell back into her cozy bed.
As Hitomi lied there, she tossed and turned in the dim room. The only lights were from the faint glow-in-the-dark solar system glued onto her ceiling by Hiro, Toshi, and herself.
As she reminisced, the youngest child didn't realize how a fond smile crept up on her tear-stained face.
Twelve year old Hiro got her hand glued to the ceiling, while the four year old twins unintentionally glued their hands together.
All three of them ended up with a small scar on their palm because the Shinso children thought it would be a genius idea to not call for their parents, and rip their hand away from the surface it was stuck to.
A small chuckle sounded from Tomi as she turned onto her stomach, burying her damp face into her pillow.
"Dumb kids," she scoffed affectionately, closing her eyes again.
But before she could begin to drift into dreamland, a soft knock sounded outside her room.
"Tomi? Are you awake?" a barely audible whisper came through the thin closed door.
'Toshi? Why's he up?' the girl silently wondered as she slowly pushed herself up.
Not wanting to wait for answers, Hitomi spoke up. "Uh, yeah, come in."
As the boy, (now visibly confused himself) opened the door, the twins just stared at each other for a moment.
"Dude what are—"
"What are you doing—"
They both stopped, and Hitomi exhaled humorously before motioning for him to continue.
"Was just gonna turn your alarm back to normal since, y'know.."
"It's still the nyan cat theme?" the wild haired girl lazily smiled, crossing her arms.
Mimicking her pose as he walked over and sat on the end of her bed, Hitoshi chuckled.
"Yeah," he mumbled with a small smile, soon turning his bed head to her with a tilt. "So, why're you up? You hate mornings."
