The Cowper HouseCressida felt as though she was a statue. What lies this man tells. I have never liked the girl, in truth. But murder, that is a far bigger insult than I would ever consider.
Who is he to jeopardise someone who has been through such a bad ordeal. My problems seem only minuscule at present in comparison.
How easily swayed my mama and papa have been. I thought them smarter than this. They think of me as a small minded girl who is not bright, yet I could see right through this cousin Charles.
I should be glad that someone else has knocked her off her stool. Yet, I feel like I am the villain in my own story. Eloise showed me kindness when no other would. Time for me to try and be a better person, to hell with my family.
Dear Penelope.
I write to you in warning. My parents have been convinced by papas cousin Mr Charles Norton that you, and you alone are the reason for your husband demise.
I am so sorry that this scandal has come to your door. In all earnest, I did not know the cruelty of the man.
Please accept my deepest apologies for my past. I promise you I only intend to help you going forward. I will visit Eloise at the Bridgerton house in two days. Please be there.
Sincerely
Miss Cressida Cowper
Cressida called for a maid.
"We are to go to Rotten Row in the morning. I need you to pass this letter to Rae, the Featherington handmaid. Can't you do that for me"
Her maid nodded. "Yes miss"
"You must not tell a soul" Cressida warned. If word got back to her mother, worse her papa then there wouldn't be a corner in all of Mayfair of which to hide herself.
"I understand" she nodded. Cressida smiled.
The Bridgerton Home
"Thank you for your letter, Cressida" Pen didn't know what to say. Cressida had always been so cruel. Inherited by her own family perhaps. Maybe that is why I started my column. To fight the cruelties I endured day in and day out.
"You are welcome, Penelope" Cressida smile was small and anxious. Which it was to be expected. For the first time in her life, she was taking control. Ignoring or just naive to the wrath that was to come.
Eloise gave Cressida a side glance "Who are you and what have you done with Miss Cressida Cowper"
"Haha very amusing Eloise"
"You're very brave. I'm surprised myself, to say I am proud of you"
Cressida's voice went soft "Eloise" she cleared her throat "my father is stubborn and unkind. He will not see reason"
Pen had an idea a brewing "Then perhaps, we can make him see things a little more clearly"
Eloise interest peaked "what do you propose?"
"The Queen is protecting me" this was information that neither ladies knew of.
Cressida looked at her questionably "Why?"
Pen shrugged a little "I am not sure, but if your father were to find that out, then who do you think he would believe"
Eloise gave a chuckle and rubbed her hands together.
Cressida smirked "What is the plan Lady Fairaway"
Penelope laid her hand on the table and leaned forward "Are you any good at chess?"
