PROMPT: "You said you're cold." "Yes. But I thought you'd hug me, not make me do exercises!"
_____It's the first snow of December, snowflakes drifting down from the sky, covering the streets slowly in powdery layers. I am seated inside Mick's and my cozy apartment, already decorated for the wintertime. Wrapped in a blanket and drinking hot chocolate as a contrast from the cold creeping on my skin. Even though the apartment is heated I am kind of freezing at the moment. Mick sits across from me, scrolling through his phone, speaking with me occasionally.
"You said you're cold." Mick says with an amused smile when he catches me shivering. I huff, a small laugh coming over my lips.
"Yes, but I thought you'd hug me, not make me do exercises!" I raise an eyebrow, gesturing to the yoga mat Mick had spread out on the floor when I mentioned that I was freezing.
Mick smirks "It's the only way to really warm you up. You've been sitting around all day, no wonder you are freezing." He stands up, throwing his phone on the couch, before motioning me to come closer. "Come on. Let's get you moving. A few stretches won't kill you."
I let out a sigh and roll my eyes. "You're lucky I love you." I mutter and let the blanket fall to join Mick on the mat. He has always been the active one, constantly trying to bring me to be more energetic, to be less of a couch potato, as he loves to call it, but I don't mind. Mick's determination to get me moving always makes me laugh and I usually just wait for him to return after his run or when he comes back from the gym.
As Mick demonstrates a stretch I follow him, even though I am not motivated to do so. "I don't think this is working." I mutter, shaking my arms out after trying some things Mick showed me. "I am still cold." I inform him and he shakes his head with a grin.
"The goal is to warm you up; you have to do what I am doing." He instructs and adjusts my posture gently with a hand on my shoulder, guiding me into the right position. "Take a deep breath and hold the stretch.
I roll my eyes but follow as he says. "I swear this is some weird version of torture" Is something I mumble to myself, but Mick hears it and laughs.
"I promise, no torture. Just a little stretching."
The warmth of his touch lingers on my skin when Mick moves away to show me a different pose. I glance at him watching his focused expression while he moves through each of the positions fluidly. Can't help myself but smile, feeling a warmth in my chest, not from the exercise, but from doing something together with a loved one.
"All right" Mick says, finally satisfied with their progress. "Now to the fun part." He grins goes to the stereo and turns up some music. Mick comes close to me and takes my hand.
"Come, let's dance."
I hesitate for a moment. "You want to dance with me?"
"It's the best way to warm you up." Mick winks at me and I smile at him.
He spins me around and for a moment I can forget about the cold. Our laughs echo through the apartment when we stumble over each other's feet, trying to keep moving nevertheless. I never considered myself a dancer, but with Mick, it doesn't matter. We are both laughing, moving together in our own rhythm, hardly taking the music as advice.
After a few minutes, I am out of breath from giggling, my cheeks red and I need to step away from Mick with a grin.
"You win, I am warm now."
Mick pulls me back into his arms, holding me tight to his chest. "Told you." He whispers into my hair, and I lean into his touch. The cold can be as harsh as it wants, but staying inside with Mick, being close to him feels like it couldn't bother me anyway.
"I am still cold." I whisper, voice teasing, telling him I am not really telling the truth.
"Really, after all that dancing?" Mick asks, pulling back to look at me and I can just smile, tilting my head to the side.
"Well, I guess I'm just waiting for a proper hug."
Mick laughs softly, shaking his head. "You have a funny way of asking."
I roll my eyes and wrap my arms around his neck to pull him close to me again. Mick's arms tighten around me and for a moment we just stand there in silence. Music still playing in the background, but it doesn't bother them. The world feels like just the two of us exist right now in their apartment surrounded by warmth.
Mick pulls away, just enough to look me in the eyes. "You know" he mumbles softly "You really are impossible sometimes."
I raise an eyebrow, teasing him "I am not! I am just...trying to get the most out of every situation." Mick smiles, shaking his head but with affection. "I think you've got the situation figured out. But maybe I am the one who needs warming up next."
I lean forward to kiss his cheek. "I think we can take care of that."
He grins arms still around my waist. "This is the best part of winter. The cold can keep the distance as long as we have each other." I rest my head against his shoulder. "I agree, it's always better when we are together."
Outside the snow continues to fall, covering everything outside like a white blanket, but the warmth between us keeps the cold just to the outside. I close my eyes, trying to freeze that moment into my memories, knowing with Mick I would never be cold.
