I watched as Zanaya took her hand from mine as soon as we walked through the doors that opened to the room with the gems that held and sealed our fate and paused as soon as we were through.
Her whole body was relaxed, and she was in this trancelike state that I had seen with Daniel while she started to make her way to her gem and to seal her fate to begin her new life as a part of my group and becoming a Holder.
I stayed silent while she took her hand out of mine, knowing full well that it wasn't my place to interrupt her from making her way to the pedestal, and it was not the mischievous female's place that had followed us into the room to interrupt her either.
Even though she was the lady of the box and the keeper of the gems until they were claimed by those that needed them...
Quickly, I turned around and stopped the door closing with a loud bang, earning a silent groan from the female in front of me.
Katie had a shit eating grin on her face while she looked at me, and she tucked her head closer to her chest, silently accepting defeat. She didn't say a word about me holding the door partially open so that it wouldn't bang like it had in the past and break Zanaya from that trancelike state that I "needed" her in if we wanted to get home at a certain time.
"Not this time," I mouthed while I scowled and narrowed my eyes playfully, and Katie shrugged while her grin grew wider and more evil than it had in the past. "Pain in my butt."
"I know," she mouthed and winked teasingly, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes and scowl, even though a small smile broke through my "intimidating" look, much to my friend's amusement. "That is why you love me."
I rolled my eyes and flashed her a small wink and a smirk. "Debatable," I mouthed, earning a small teasing gasp from Katie and a small snicker from me. "That is highly debatable, Katie."
Zanaya gasped out in shock as if she had woken up from whatever had put her in a trance and blearily looked around as if she was trying to find me. "Eira?" she asked, her voice small and filled with worry and fear. "Where are you? Are you still? What happened?"
I bit back an annoyed groan and tucked my head closer to my chest, earning a small snicker from Katie, who looked amused and pleased. "I am still at the doors and making sure that our guide isn't being a pain in the ass, Zanaya," I said. I narrowed my eyes at the "young" female, earning a small snicker from her.
Zanaya turned to look at us, her eyes bright and filled with nervousness and sadness that I could not describe, and it left a small sting of guilt in my stomach. "I thought you weren't going to let me go," she said, her voice cracking and becoming filled with a lot of emotion and pain, and I couldn't help but flinch and tuck my head closer to my chest while I looked away from her.
I turned to look at her again and offered her an apologetic smile, and I continued to hold the door partially opened while I stared at her. "I am sorry, Zanaya," I said, bowing my head in apology. "You were in a trancelike state and had let go of my hand, and I knew that you had to do that part on your own." I nodded toward the stone and bit the inside of my lips, silently praying that she would forgive me for going back on my promise.
Zanaya frowned and slowly blinked while she studied me. She looked at her gem before she looked at me, cocking her head to the side and continuing to study me as if she wanted to figure out what I was going to say before I said it. "I was?" she asked and furrowed her brows, and I nodded in confirmation. "How?"
"You can go ahead and let the door close, Your Highness," Katie said and nudged me, teasingly, not answering Zanaya's question. "I promise that it won't close with a bang."
I rolled my eyes and scowled but did what I was told to do. I let the door go so that it gently closed with a soft click before I looked at Katie and raised an eyebrow in question, silently asking her if she wanted to answer Zanaya's question or for me to answer it.
Katie bit back a small smile and tucked her head closer to her chest. She gestured for me to answer her question, and I bit back a tired sigh before I slowly nodded and pressed my lips into a thin line.
"So, you were hearing this type of song or something like that," I said and furrowed my brows while I tucked my head closer to my chest. "I think it's this pull or something that caused you to be in the trance," I said before I shrugged and grimaced, pressing my lips into a thin line because I had no idea how to answer her question. "It's happened to me twice and then it happened to both Daniel and Ralph as well."
"Why?" she asked and cocked her head while she studied me. "Why does it do that?"
"Katie?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question while I looked at her because I had no idea why it does that.
"Magic," Katie said and shrugged while she shook her head with a small frown on her face. "I think the Gods and Goddesses know why it does that, but I do not know it myself. I am sure that I can ask them later."
"Or we will be able to ask them whenever it's time for us to go there ourselves," I said and looked at Katie before I looked at Zayana with a small smile, "but we will know in due time."
Zanaya hesitated before she slowly nodded. She turned her attention back to the gem and took another step toward it before she caught herself and looked around to look at the other pedestals before she looked at me. "Are we still in the box?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Yes," I said and nodded in confirmation. "This is where all of the gems are hidden and protected. If one of us dies, then they end up here again."
"Except for that one time with ice," Katie said, and I rolled my eyes and scowled. She looked at me and winked, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes while I scowled, pressing my lips into a thin line.
"I wasn't dead, Katie," I said, my voice filled with annoyance before she snickered and nodded in agreement, "so of course, it wouldn't come back here. It hid itself where I had last had it, which was inside of my house."
"Castle," Katie pointed out and gave me a pointed look with a small smile on her face. "You live in a castle, Eira. You could call it a home, but it's not a house."
I rolled my eyes and shook my head, pressing my lips into a thin line. I didn't say a word while Katie snickered and tucked her head closer to her chest before she grew serious and turned her attention back to Zanaya.
"But yes, the gems end up here once their holder is dead. If their Holder loses their memories, then they end up with their Watcher or their home place like their home world." Katie gestured to me, and Zanaya looked at me before she looked at me. "That's what happened with Eira. The gem was on Angesia."
I nodded and cleared my throat before I shrugged and pressed my lips into a thin line. "Or they can sometimes stay with the person," I said, earning a weird look from Katie before she looked at Zanaya. "It depends on the person, situation, or whatever, but it will stay with them."
"Are you sure?" Katie asked and looked at me, raising an eyebrow in question and studying me with a small frown on her face, and I nodded in confirmation and pressed my lips into a thin line. "How?"
I opened my mouth to tell her but closed it when I couldn't explain to her what I was feeling. I shrugged and grimaced, pressing my lips into a thin line while my cheeks turned red. "I don't know," I said before I cleared my throat and shifted on my feet. "I just know that what I am saying is true. The gem will stay even if the person loses their memories, but it will depend on the person and then what is happening around them."
And hopefully it would never happen to me ever again...
