The Hokage's office bathed in the soft glow of afternoon, the sunlight filtering through the wide windows. Kakashi stood casually before Hiruzen, arms crossed, his posture relaxed yet his gaze unusually sharp. The air was heavy with the faint scent of parchment, ink and smoke, a constant in this room that had witnessed countless decisions shaping Konoha's future. Hiruzen, seated at his desk, looking calm, though the slight furrow in his brow betrayed his concern. He tapped his pipe against an ashtray, his sharp eyes fixed on the Copy ninja as the latter began his report.
"So far, I'd say the kid's been pretty honest. No inconsistencies in his story or the way he acts," Kakashi said, scratching the back of his neck. The third Hokage nodded, stroking his beard thoughtfully.
"That's good to hear. But it's worth remaining cautious. What else have you observed?" He asked the gray-haired man as his gaze shifted back on him.
"Well... There's something unusual. (Y/N) has this fascination with the human body, anatomy, healing, all of it. He's more knowledgeable than any kid his age should be. But when I asked him if he'd ever thought about becoming a medical ninja, he got... weird. Depressed, even," the jonin hesitated, his gaze flickering to the window for a moment. Hiruzen leaned back, his fingers touching each other.
"Depressed, you say? That reaction is indeed strange. Perhaps it's tied to something he experienced while under Orochimaru's care. That man's experiments often had a twisted focus on the human body."
"That's what I was thinking. But it's not my place to press him on it yet. He clams up if you push too hard," Kakashi frowned, his voice tinged with frustration. The old man exhaled heavily, the weight of (Y/N)'s past etched into his features.
"A tragic influence. (Y/N) has undoubtedly suffered deeply, more than any child should. We can only hope that being here in Konoha will begin to heal those scars," he spoke with an optimistic tone that caused the other ninja's shoulders to relax sightly.
"There's something else. The kid... he doesn't know how to interact with other children. It's like he's lived his whole life speaking a different language. He either scares them with how blunt he is or... just weirds them out completely," he explained slightly discouraged at the child's current situation. The Hokage allowed himself a faint, melancholic smile. A hint of sadness could be seen in his eyes.
"Given his upbringing, that's to be expected. Orochimaru would have hardly fostered any social skills in him. Has he made any friends?"
"Not exactly friends, but he's... adapting. Guy's been letting him join his training sessions. (Y/N) has so much energy to burn that I end up getting roped into those ridiculous challenges. Again. But he's opening up. He's even comfortable enough to tease me," Kakashi admitted, his tone softening. Hiruzen chuckled quietly, though the sadness in his eyes remained.
"Guy always did have a talent for connecting with people, no matter how unusual they might be. It's good (Y/N) feels comfortable with you both. But it saddens me to hear just how deeply Orochimaru's influence runs."
