Alec
Just when I thought we were making progress, this goes and happens.
Holding Lenora close against my bare chest, I couldn't help but let out a deep sigh of frustration.
I had always wanted a family of my own, but yesterday was enough of a reason to put me off having what I desired most.
My past would always catch up with me. I was branded for life as a leader of a gang. It was in my blood. And if there's one thing I know best, it's always the innocent ones that get hurt in acts of revenge.
Looking down at Lenora, I felt a sharp ache in my heart as I observed every perfect detail of her. She really had taken 50/50 of our genes.
But as I held my tiny angel in my arms, I couldn't shake all the horrible thoughts of what would have happened if that bastard had successfully taken her away.
The chances of finding her would be small.
Clenching my eyes shut, I tried to flood my brain with all the reasons as to why Arabella and Lenora should remain by my side. But the harder I thought, the more overpowering thoughts of my darkest fears came to light.
"The thought of you being harmed because of me, is more painful than me leaving you and your mother. You are too pure for this world and I, fuck".
Putting Lenora down in her cot, I hurried to the bathroom and switched on the cold tap.
Leaning over the sink, I placed my hands under the cold water and splashed myself with it over and over.
Raising my head up, I stared at myself in the mirror and glared at my reflection.
Glancing down at my bruised knuckles, I bowed my head in shame at my own thoughts.
"No".
Standing back up to my full height, I clicked my head to one side instantly releasing the tension in my neck.
All thoughts of abandoning them for their safety dissipated into thin air.
Instead of drying my hands on the paper towel, I ran my damp hands through my messy hair, using the cold water to slick the loose strands of hair back.
The bodies would pile up, but all the more to mark my territory and bring fear to those who dare to challenge me or threaten to harm my family.
"I'll always protect what's mine. I'll always protect my girls".
Smirking at the new confidence I was feeling, I stepped out of the bathroom and picked up my jacket.
Throwing my biker jacket on with pride, I walked over to my little angel who was staring at me with her innocent wide doe eyes.
"Let's go bring mummy home" I whispered to Lenora knowing what needed to be done.
Lenora was making remarkable progress with one of the doctors saying she was very close to going home.
"I'm taking Lenora up to her mother" I muttered to the nurse who had just entered the room.
"Actually, Alec, this is Dr Jackson who just wants a quick word".
Holding Lenora securely in my arm, I waited for the doctor to enter the room followed by some younger people who were panting heavily as they continued writing on their notebooks.
"Mr Boewen. I can tell you're keen to be with your wife, so I'll make this quick. Lenora is making remarkable progress. And I hear you're wife is doing well. It is my recommendation that Lenora no longer needs intensive care and I've requested a bed on the post maternity ward for both Lenora and your wife. I have liased with the doctors looking after your wife. You've overcome the worse, Mr Boewen. You will soon be able to have some peace. If you can just wait for the move before taking Lenora out of the ward, it'll make the move easier".
