It was a cool, bright morning, with the sun streaming through the curtains into Jane and Andrea's room. Jane, as usual, was the first to wake up. She stretched lazily, looking up at the ceiling for a moment before turning to Andrea, who was still sound asleep, one arm wrapped tightly around her pillow.

"Andrea, wake up!" said Jane, gently shaking her. "If we don't get a move on, we'll be late for school!"

Andrea mumbled something unintelligible, burying her face under the covers. But Jane was patient and knew exactly how to persuade her. "If you get up now, we can stop by the bakery and get your favorite cookies."

That promise worked wonders. Andrea came out of the blankets with a sleepy smile. "All right, but only if you also pick up a doughnut for me."

The two girls quickly got ready, and Jane helped Andrea adjust the bandage on her injured leg. "Does it still hurt?" Jane asked her, with a shadow of worry in her eyes.

"A little, but I can walk," Andrea replied with a smile, trying to reassure her. "And anyway, you always help me."

The two went down to the kitchen, where Alexandra and Piper were already preparing breakfast. The smell of toast and jam filled the air.

"Good morning, sleepyhead," Piper said to Andrea, giving her a kiss on the head as she set the plate in front of her.

"Jane made me get up," Andrea joked, looking at her sister with a smirk.

"Good girl Jane," Alexandra replied, casting a complicit glance at her daughter. "And now eat, I don't want you to be late."

After breakfast, Jane and Andrea headed for school, walking side by side. Jane carried Andrea's backpack to ease her burden as they chatted quietly about the day.

Arriving at the school, everything seemed normal, at least until a group of boys approached. They were the school bullies, known to target the weakest. Jane immediately stepped in front of Andrea, shielding her with her body.

"What?" said Jane in a firm voice, looking the older boy in the eyes. "Leave us alone."

The bully laughed, advancing with a menacing air. "Or what, little one? You can't do anything."

The situation quickly escalated. One of the bullies pushed Jane against the wall, pinning her with a hand to her neck. "Let's see if you're still so brave when you can't breathe," he hissed.

Andrea screamed, trying to intervene, but the pain in her leg blocked her. "Leave her alone!" she yelled, but her voice seemed to be lost in the chaos.

Jane flailed, trying to free herself, but the tightness in her neck prevented her from breathing. Her eyes slowly closed, and her body slumped, unconscious.

At that moment, Alexandra and Piper came running. Piper launched herself at the bully, wrenching him away from Jane with all her strength. "Get away from my daughter!" she shouted, pushing him away.

Alexandra ran toward Andrea, who was crying in pain and fear. She gently lifted her in her arms and approached Piper and Jane.

"Jane!" cried Piper, gently shaking her. "Honey, open your eyes!"

Alexandra searched Jane's backpack, finding the inhaler. She handed it to Piper, who immediately used it to help her breathe. For a moment, it seemed as if time had stopped.

Piper and Alexandra moved quickly. Jane, still unconscious, was gently lifted into Piper's arms, while Alexandra picked up Andrea, whose injured leg made it difficult to walk. Without wasting any time, they climbed into the car and headed for home.

During the journey, the silence was charged with tension. Andrea, sitting next to Jane in the back seat, kept holding her hand, desperately hoping she would wake up. Every now and then she whispered, "Please, Jane, open your eyes. Don't leave me alone."

Alexandra occasionally turned from the passenger seat to check on her daughters, her heart heavy with worry. Piper, behind the wheel, tightened her lips with determination. She had experienced enough fear for one lifetime and had no intention of losing anyone in her family.

As soon as they arrived home, Alexandra and Piper worked in perfect sync. Piper carried Jane unconscious upstairs and carefully laid her on the bed in her room, arranging a pillow under her head. Alexandra, meanwhile, helped Andrea up the stairs and sat her next to her sister.

"Jane will recover," Alexandra said in a reassuring voice, stroking Andrea's hair. "But we have to be patient and wait."

Andrea nodded, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. "Can I stay with her?" she asked, her voice still trembling.

"Of course," Piper replied, approaching with a glass of water and the inhaler. "But call us right away if anything happens, okay?"

Andrea nodded again, determined not to leave Jane for a moment. Alexandra and Piper left the room, giving their daughters a final glance before gently closing the door.

Sitting beside the bed, Andrea took Jane's hand between her own. Her sister's breathing was still labored, but it seemed to be slowly improving thanks to the inhaler they had administered earlier. Andrea leaned forward, whispering words of comfort.

"Jane, you are my rock. You are always the one who protects me and makes me feel safe. Now it's my turn. I will stay here, I will not leave until you are better."

Time passed slowly, each second seemed like an eternity. Andrea remained in her seat, never ceasing to watch over Jane. At one point, she saw a slight movement of her sister's eyelids.

"Jane?" called Andrea, hope shining in her eyes.

Jane let out a weak groan, slowly opening her eyes. She looked at Andrea with a confused but grateful look. "Andrea... you're here," she murmured, her voice barely audible.

"You're back!" exclaimed Andrea, tears starting to flow again, this time of relief. She bent down to hug Jane gently, careful not to hurt her.

Piper and Alexandra heard the commotion from the next room and ran in. When they saw Jane awake, a wave of relief went through them both. Piper sat beside her, stroking her face. "You gave us quite a scare," she said with a tremulous smile.

Jane nodded weakly, still too tired to speak, but her slight smile was all they needed. Alexandra approached with a glass of water, helping her take a few sips.

"Take it easy," Alexandra said. "You are safe now."

Andrea sat back down next to Jane, holding her hand as she had done before. "I told you I would stay with you," she said proudly.

Jane looked at her, her smile a little stronger now. "I know—and I'm glad you did."
