MELISIZWE MZIMELA
“Are you going to say anything?” I ask my sister who looks like she is frozen. I have just explained the who situation about Hlengiwe to her and she looks shocked.
“ARE YOU INSANE, MELISIZWE? ARE YOU CRAZY?!” She hits my shoulder and I frown.
“Ouch.”
“Don’t ‘ouch’ me. You do understand the consequences of your actions. You do understand that this could be the end of your relationship with your son. Your kids even. You think Zama won’t side with her brother over this? What has gotten into you? Literally thousands of single women in Durban and you go for the one you can’t have. I never knew you to be such an idiot. Did she feed you something?” she is already pacing up and down.
She has never shouted at me like this before. The only time she was mad at me was when I married Thobisile. She could feel that I did love her but not enough to marry her. She warned me but I didn’t listen and when I told her about the divorce, she simply said ‘I told you so’.
“Trust me, I tried so hard to bury my feelings for her. I convinced myself that my life was peaceful and better without her but I was just lying to myself. She was not made for Mbulelo. She was brought into his life so that she could meet me. I know what this is going to do to the whole family. I know I might lose my kids but I can’t lose my only shot at true love.”
She chuckles angrily and stands in front of me with her hands on her waist. “You are unbelievable. You just like her because she is young and the thought of being with her ups your adrenaline. The forbidden fruit. The thought of getting caught gets you off. Do you need me to set you up with someone her age? How old is she again? 23?”
I know a lot of people won’t be willing to understand my relationship with Hlengiwe. I don’t mind explaining myself but what I won’t have is people thinking I am with her because I want the thrill of the forbidden fruit. Fuck that. Hlengi is not just an easy a good lay. She is more than that. She is my future wife and people better accept that.
I look at my sister and sigh. “I know what I am doing is morally wrong. You of all people know I always try to do the right thing for the benefit of everyone. But this is about me. I hate that I have to break my son’s heart. If it were up to me, I would have went for a different person but my soul calls for hers. My heart cries for hers. My body yearns for hers. She is literally the centre of my universe. She completes me and I don’t see myself doing this life thing without her by my side.”
She chuckles and sits down. “This is madness. Utterly madness. When are you planning to tell everyone?”
I scratch the back of my neck. “If it were up to me, I would have told them the moment she agreed to be my girlfriend. But I don’t want to overwhelm her. I don’t want people attacking her image or character just because she chose me.”
She rolls her eyes. “You do understand that they are going to judge her. A lot of people. Prolonging the inevitable won’t change anything. Just fuckin rip off the bandage. It is better to tell your kids the truth than to let them found out themselves. Mbulelo might be thinking about paying lobola to his baby mama but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love this girl anymore. You remember how highly he spoke of her even after they broke up. So, what are you waiting for? Unless you are unsure about your relationship. In which case, just end it before you hurt your loved ones for nothing.”
“I am very certain and content with the way my relationship is. I don’t doubt Hlengiwe’s love and commitment. She is a chef who recently opened a restaurant which was funded by a couple of investors. So she is afraid that if this gets out in a bad way, it might look bad on her investors. That is her only consent.”
She scoffs. “That’s her only consent? She doesn’t care about breaking your son’s heart?”
“Why should she care about him? She doesn’t owe her anything. They broke up. That’s that.”
She gives me a look and shakes her head. “Men are impossible. I can’t believe you.” She takes a deep breath and keeps quote for a few seconds. I know not to disturb her because she is thinking. "You just don’t think maan, Melisizwe. Use your upper head not your lower head. It will do good.”
I chuckle. I know she is coming around right now. “I know it is not going to be easy. But I am willing to sacrifice a lot for this woman. She is my soul mate. I know you are not that in touch with your emotions but I am begging you to see things from my side and I need your support on this. God knows I do. Can I count on you?”
She huffs and sits back. “You are unbelievable. But I guess there is no bin to throw your other part. First things first. Mbulelo is the first person to tell and I am giving you three days.”
And now I have a deadline. So help me God.
NQOBILE MSIBI
Dating a surgeon is not as nice as one may think. Sure he is very affectionate and very giving. He will tell you everything you want to hear and even more. He will make you promises all time but the moment his pager goes off, even if he is on top of you, he will finish and quickly freshen up before driving off like a maniac to the hospital. The drama that you see on the medical shows, might be a bit exaggerated but the man is a trauma surgeon. He is a VIP there.
So planning something special for someone who is always busy like that is nearly impossible. Which is why I decided to bring him something at work. Nothing special, just one of our meals from Healthy Eats. I already know the staff hear. Yeah, I am that type of person that is called ‘umafikajwayele’ People get used to me within an hour of knowing me. I have a welcoming aura.
“Hey Buhle.” I greet the night shift receptionist and she smiles at me.
“Hello Nqo. You brought me something nice?” She asks. Yeah, I have to bribe her so that she can let me in without any hassles.
“Here you go.” I hand her a small package with dessert. She likes cake. “Enjoy honey.”
She smiles widely. “Thank you and off you go.”
I take the elevator to the second floor and head to his office. His receptionist is not there. Maybe she is in the toilet. I just proceed and head inside the office. What I find there makes me freeze. What the hell?!
“Just one round. No one needs to know.” This girl says to him, brushing his beard. She is sitting on top of his desk with her legs wide open.
Phelo clears his throat. “I am flattered, but I have a…Oww God.”
That Oww God is because the girl just spread her legs wider and is rubbing something down there. I am pretty sure I have an idea of what. I am fuckin livid. This didn’t have to get to this point. He let it get to this. I am going to end him. The food falls on the floor as I charge inside the office.
“Not on my fuckin watch.” I pull the girl from the desk and she lands on the floor. While she screams, I turn to this weak man and give him a mean slap. “Is this the ‘on call’ part? Huh? Who do you take me for, Phelelani? Am I friend or a joke to you?” I don’t even shout because this is still a place for the sick but I am just so angry right now.
Phelelani looks so shocked by what is happening. Her eyes pop out. “Babe.” He stands up and I want to punch him in the guts for having that boner. This man doesn’t know me. “It’s not what it looks like.”
Someone pulls me from behind and a slap lands on my face. I chuckle and turn to the bitch who was seducing the weak ass man I am supposedly dating.
“You are so going to wish you hadn’t done that.” I charge towards her and Phelelani pulls me away.
“Babe, don’t do this. Asanda, leave.” He orders the girl and she gives him a cheeky look.
“Phelo, you are choosing this vandal? Really? She is nothing but a hood rat and a kid. Are you foreal?” She asks and I laugh angrily.
“Call me a kid one more time and I will show you how the first World War began.” I try to free myself from the asshole’s hold and he tightens it.
“ASANDA LEAVE! NOW” He shouts and the girl pouts before heading out.
He sighs and turns me around so that I can face him. “Listen, babe. I am sorry for….”
“Save it for someone who cares.” I free myself from his hold and walk out. This asshole. Nxx.
