"Who else knows about the crown and scepter?"

After the meeting, Mal got a ride from one of the castle's chauffeurs to Evie's cottage, where they had all agreed to meet before heading to Jane's birthday party. She would've ridden over with Ben and Bella but she figured both needed to calm down before going anywhere, so she left without them.

Despite what Ben had said about nothing discussed leaving the room, Mal had given Evie a recap of what had been said- of course altering certain parts.

"No one, I mean think about it, people are scared enough as it is. They have to employ these entirely new security measures."

"Will this delay our bringing over more vk's?" Asked Evie. Mal didn't answer immediately which set off warning bells for her. "Mal, what is it?"

"They're talking about closing the barrier for good." Answered Mal switching out any pronouns so as not to take any accountability. It was an option, not set in stone, but Mal didn't clarify that. Nor did she mention that it had been her who suggested it.

"But you were against that right? I mean, the four of us are living the dream here and we're making a difference, we can't stop now. I mean, what could be more important than that?"

"No, yeah, I know. I mean, maybe security. or maybe peace of mind for everyone in auradon." They were in Evie's design room, the others hadn't arrived yet so it was only them. Mal was sitting down and she felt antsy, she wanted to get up and pace the room to get her blood flowing but that'd probably make her look suspicious.

"Is that what they're thinking? M, are they seriously thinking that no one will ever go in and out of the Isle again? What, we never get to go back and see our parents? And what about these kids? We promised them they could go back and visit whenever they wanted." Not that Evie felt any need to see her mother, but it was nice to know that option was available! She stood up abruptly spooking Mal, she was as passionate about this as her girlfriend and it showed.

"What did Bella say about it?"

"She feels the same way they do and thinks it's for the best. Her idea." Mal knew she fucked up but she couldn't take it back without admitting it had been her, and she didn't want Evie to know it had been her who suggested it. She wouldn't be able to take her disappointment.

"What?! No, you're mistaken, you probably heard her wrong or misunderstood her. That's probably it, I'll have to talk to her, call her before she gets here. I'm glad you're a part of these conversations so you can stand up for us vk's when we're not there to defend ourselves... Thank you for telling me, M." Evie hugged her, the hole Mal dug herself in was getting deeper the more she let Bella take the blame. When she pulled away, Evie took her phone to call her girlfriend, Mal didn't expect her to call so soon and in front of her! She was panicking now...

"Hmm, it went to voicemail. She'll be here soon, I suppose I'll talk to her then." Evie went into the kitchen leaving Mal alone with her guilty conscience. To avoid being left alone with it, Mal went to what was now her room to change. She had worn a dress, a lousy idea seeing as anytime she wore one she turned into a dragon- okay those were only two examples but her reasoning only had to make sense to her. After changing, Mal wandered outside as her conscience seemed to follow her like a stray dog who got too attached. Fortunately for her, something else was about to occupy her mind.

Pink storm clouds clouded the sky, pink lightning struck nearly missing her. She stumbled backward, careful not to fall, and hit her head on the pavement. Where lightning struck, pink smoke came out and from it emerged...
