For some, the countdown to prom starts at the beginning of their senior year; for others, it starts on their first day of high school. For many of the students at Auraidon Prep, it was the latter.

Auradon Prep was known for its royal students, winning sport and academic teams, and most of all, its killer dances, and prom was no exception. Its location was always different, to find it clues were left all over the school, and students had to come together to combine all their pieces of the puzzle and figure it out.

Each year was magical, literally, which was only possible because of Fairy Godmothers deal with the three fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather). The deal was that Fairy Godmother would turn the other cheek to their use of magic for a school-sanctioned event so long as everything was safe and appropriate, it saved the school time and money and the three fairies got to plan a party, a win-win. While magic was not outlawed by any means, the constant discouragement of its use made the three fairies distance themselves from Fairy Godmother and the teaching positions she had offered them.

The theme for this year's prom was  'A Night Under The Stars', and all the clues were astronomy-themed; Look at the stars, decipher them What stories they tell, and where do they lead you?  All clues led them to a wide-open field although nothing existed until today.

Upon the students' arrival, a staircase would come down from the sky (a ramp for those needing one). The railing of it would be wrapped by shooting stars, and the stairs were pitch black, but once the students stepped on them to begin their climb, a galaxy would appear.

Once at the top, they would be led to a grand planetarium whose dome ceiling was a huge window to the sky, and tonight the sky would shine down on them as their spotlight as the stars and the moon made way for them to dance the night away.

The dance would not begin for a couple of hours, while final preparations for the night were made, the students were pampering themselves. Businesses thrived as many of them went into the city to get their nails, hair, and faces done for tonight. No expenses were spared as they all wanted to look their best, it was the night of nights, and they gotta look just right.

Looking the best wasn't the main event, not at all, it was seeing who came with who. For established couples like Bella and Evie or Ben and Carlos, everyone knew or at least assumed they'd show up together. People like Jay, Chad, Mal, and Audrey were main source for others to speculate and gossip about. Popular boys and girls went together, it was the rule of thumbs, but what about Queen Bees who've fallen from grace? Misfit girls, who rejected the status but still rose to the top? Was Mal going at all?

Despite her open dislike of it, Mal was going only because her friends were going. She would attend with no date, not even a platonic one like Jay- she didn't want people to get the wrong idea. She loved Jay, he was one of her best friends- practically her brother- but she was so tired of people asking if they were a couple even after they've both made it clear they weren't. Going together would only further fuel the assumptions that they were and neither wanted that.

Jay was also attending without a date, but his reason was much more complicated. Jay, despite the constant rumors he's been a part of, is not a player. Sure, he likes to flirt but he does not sleep around or have multiple girlfriends, or whatever it is people assume he does. Another thing people assume about him is that he's straight, which he's not.  Jay is bisexual, sure, he doesn't walk around with a pride flag attached to him, but he doesn't shy away from showing his attraction to dudes. The students at Auradon Prep just choose what they want to believe and run with it.

Which brings him to his current situation, sort of. Jay, if asked, won't deny the fact that he's bi and he'll explain why he doesn't feel the need to tell everyone, which is well within his right. The problem arises if he's asked whether he's seeing anyone. He'd want to say yes but he'd have to say no.
