6 months later...
When spring came the following year, things seemed more quiet than ever. Birds still chirped and the deer still ran wild in the forest, but [Name] was still bound to her bed during her recovery. "How are you feeling?" But that airy voice, like sunlight peeking through the darkest night, always seemed to lift [Name]'s spirits.
Julie stood in the doorway, a small tray in hand. It'd been a few months since they'd moved into a cottage together, surrounded by nothing but wilderness, and it was paradise. Obviously, Julie's fingernails were never free from dirt, but [Name] would kiss her hand anyway.
"I'm feeling better today, thanks." [Name] sat up, the coldness of the air becoming a nice contrast to the sweat on her taped-up back. Julie hummed, appreciating the view, sitting down on the edge beside her. The mattress dipped beneath her weight. The sheets crinkled around her, making small ridges of fabric.
"I made you some biscuits. Harold's recipe, so don't get excited." Julie said while passing her a pastry. [Name] couldn't care less, she was starving. She shoveled the biscuit into her mouth. She slowed down to appreciate the fruit of Julie's labor, but damn, she was hungry.
Julie's chuckle seemed like a weight off her shoulders. [Name] looked up at her, studying her smile. It wasn't fake or forced. She was happy.
Another voice rang from the doorway, this one deeper than Julie's. "I smelled biscuits." Cod chirped, helping himself to one of the biscuits on the tray. He wasn't as hungry as [Name], but he wasted no time before burying the pastry down his throat. "Hey, who said you deserved that?" Julie's smile didn't falter, making her scolding much less severe. "[Name] can lay in bed all day and still get one without repercussions? Alright, I see how it is." Cod snorted but continued to devour the food he kept in his hand.
Julie shook her head and smiled, taking [Name]'s hand and rubbing her thumb over her knuckles. "She's special," Julie mumbled.
"For fuck's sake, get a room." He scoffed, wiping the crumbs off his shirt. "If you need me, I'll be finishing the paint on the windows." He called out from the doorway.
Once they were left alone again, [Name] couldn't suppress a small chuckle. Julie glanced at her. "What's so funny now?" She arched her eyebrows back. "Cod's only child syndrome." [Name] retorted.
They shared a brief laugh before calming down. Julie crawled onto the bed, wrapping an arm around [Name]'s shoulders and burying her nose into the back of her head. She took in a deep inhale, smiling to herself. "What are you looking for back there?" [Name] rested her hand on her leg, giving it a small pat.
Julie didn't respond, only kissing her neck hoping it would make up for the lack of response. It did, considering [Name] turned around and pressed a quick kiss to her lips. They shared each other's gaze for a moment. [Name] studied her features, looking for any hint of hesitation or regret, but her heart throbbed when she found none.
"It's been a strange ride, hasn't it?" She turned back around and leaned her head on her chest. "It certainly has." Julie's hand snaked forward, wrapping slender fingers over [Name]'s palm.
"Well?" [Name] tilted her head up. Julie looked down at her, mirroring her gaze. "Hm?"
"Are you happy now?" [Name] smiled faintly and took her hand in hers, squeezing tightly. Julie couldn't help but let out another laugh, her head pressing against [Name]'s. "Yes." She responded. "More now than ever."
