Chapter 44

After their night together, Logain didn't see much of Casimir. Now that the prince was back in the castle, he had his responsibilities to take care of. Logain knew this would happen, but he still missed him. Not a day went by where the warlock wasn't thinking about him. He felt silly for feeling this way. Logain hadn't thought about anyone this much in his life, but the prince made his heart pound. The crown prince of Ambria made him feel weak.

Logain wasn't sure what to do with himself as he walked through the streets of the capital. He tried to stay on his best behavior while in the city and didn't accept any odd jobs. He didn't have to after Casimir's last night with him. Before the prince left his side the next morning, Casimir made sure to give the warlock plenty of coin to keep him out of trouble. With no work to do, he was bored as he mindlessly walked around town. Part of him hoped he would somehow run into Casimir, but it never happened. The prince was too busy tending to his duties in the castle.

As he continued down the road, a head of white hair caught his attention. The man was quickly walking away in the opposite direction, appearing to be up to something as he looked around, making sure no one was following him. Logain scowled when he recognized the man. There weren't many young people with white hair in Ambria that Logain knew of, but he didn't think he could forget this man's face. He wore a disguise as he dressed in a plain white shirt and black pants, instead of his usual robes. Amaris darted down one of the alleyways, and despite Logain's better judgment, curiosity got the better of him. He followed the clergyman, wondering what he was sneaking around for.

Amaris wasn't heading in the direction of the castle, so he wasn't sneaking off to see the prince. That was a relief to Logain, but he still wanted to know what he was up to. He shouldn't care, but Amaris caught his attention. It didn't help that Casimir wanted to help this man, and Logain implied he would lend his assistance. Maybe if Amaris could see the corruption in the church, then he wouldn't be so bad. However, Logain would always dislike him. He knew it was jealousy that made him feel this way. Amaris was Casimir's first love, after all. He had a bond with the prince that could never be erased.

Eventually, the clergyman came to a stop further down the alleyway. Logain did as well, hiding behind one of the walls and slightly poking his head out to see Amaris. Amaris once again glanced around to make sure no one followed him. He hadn't spotted Logain yet, thankfully. The warlock could feel his heart pounding in his chest as he watched the man. If he got caught, he didn't know what to expect as a consequence. Perhaps he would turn Logain in to the church for being a warlock. Amaris didn't like Logain because of his relationship with the prince, so he wouldn't be surprised if the clergyman went to those extremes.

After a moment of silence, Amaris began to talk to someone Logain couldn't see. Someone else was meeting up with the clergyman, but Logain didn't know who. Even if he saw the person's face, it wasn't like he would know who they are. Logain didn't know many people in Ambria. Besides looking for work, the warlock kept to himself and didn't bother making friends with anyone. Casimir, Selene, and Sebastian were the only friends he needed.

Logain tried to listen to what Amaris and the other person were saying. He could hear that they were a man, but they whispered quietly to each other. Logain was only able to make out a few words. He heard them mention the High Priestess, they said 'prince' but he didn't know which prince they were talking about, Zuvelia, and something about a curse. He might not have known what they were talking about, but those few words made him worry. They could be plotting something against Casimir.

The warlock didn't think he could stay quiet and let them get away with whatever they were up to. If they were after his prince, then he would do whatever he could to protect him. Casimir wasn't the only one in the relationship who could be heroic. Without giving it a second thought, Logain came out of the shadows to face Amaris.
