The sun was shining over Atlanta, casting a golden glow over the lush gardens of the estate where Rodney's wedding was being held. The air buzzed with anticipation and joy, and the venue was a stunning mix of elegance and southern charm. White roses, eucalyptus, and soft blush-toned florals decorated the space, lining the aisle and draping from the arch where Rodney and his bride would say their vows.
Inside one of the bridal suites, Monica stood in front of the mirror in a floor-length emerald green gown, her hair styled in soft waves. Angel came up behind her, adjusting the back of her dress and kissing her on the shoulder. "You look beautiful, babe."
Monica smiled, meeting Angel's eyes in the mirror. "Thank you, love. Can you believe our boy is getting married?"
"I know. It feels like just yesterday we were helping him move into his first apartment," Angel said, shaking her head in disbelief. "He's really grown into such an incredible man."
Downstairs, guests were beginning to arrive. Melo, now a sophomore in college and thriving on the basketball court, looked sharp in his tailored black suit as he greeted family and friends. Laiyah, now a high school freshman, was talking excitedly with her cousins about her latest audition. She wore a soft champagne-colored dress and beamed with pride as she introduced Serenity—now three years old and full of personality—to everyone who passed by.
Serenity clung to Monica's leg briefly before running off to her big brother Melo, who scooped her up with a smile. "There's my favorite girl!" he said, spinning her around while she giggled.
The ceremony began shortly after, and Monica's heart swelled with pride as she watched Rodney standing at the altar, tears in his eyes as his bride walked toward him. The love between them was evident in every glance, every touch, every vow.
After the "I dos," the celebration began in full swing.
The reception was nothing short of magical. Twinkling fairy lights crisscrossed above the outdoor dance floor, casting a soft golden hue over the smiling guests. Tables were draped in ivory linens, adorned with centerpieces of white roses, soft blush peonies, and floating candles.
As the newlyweds made their grand entrance into the reception, the crowd erupted into cheers. Rodney, looking handsome and beaming with joy, led his bride—glowing in a form-fitting satin gown—into the center of the floor.
The DJ's voice came through the speakers. "Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for the couple's first dance."
A smooth instrumental version of "So Beautiful" by Musiq Soulchild began to play. Rodney took his bride's hand, pulling her gently into his arms. They swayed slowly, lost in their own world, whispering quietly and occasionally laughing at private jokes. Their love radiated in the most tender, unspoken way.
Monica watched from their table with Angel by her side, her eyes glistening. She reached for Angel's hand and gave it a squeeze. "He's really happy," Monica said softly.
Angel nodded. "You did good, baby. He's everything a man should be."
Once the first dance ended, the crowd applauded, and Rodney helped his wife from the dance floor.
The reception hall glowed in warm tones of gold and blush, with soft candlelight dancing off crystal centerpieces and fresh floral arrangements. The DJ's playlist transitioned seamlessly from upbeat classics to slow, sultry love songs, giving couples a chance to pull each other close.
Monica and Angel found a quiet moment on the dance floor, moving together like it was second nature. Angel's hands rested comfortably at Monica's waist, while Monica wrapped her arms around her neck, the two swaying in sync.
"You know I almost tripped walking down that aisle," Monica whispered with a grin.
Angel laughed. "I saw you catch yourself. But you recovered like the queen you are."
"Mmhm," Monica teased. "You would've been laughing loud if I fell."
"I would've caught you," Angel murmured, then leaned in, brushing her lips across Monica's. "Like always."
Monica giggled, resting her forehead against Angel's. "We really raised a whole husband."
Angel glanced over at Rodney, who was talking animatedly with his bride and her parents. "I know. He looks so happy."
"And she's so beautiful," Monica added. "This feels like a dream."
Their moment was interrupted by the wedding planner giving Monica a gentle nod—it was time for her surprise performance.
Angel kissed her cheek. "Go give them a show, superstar."
Monica made her way to the small stage set up at the edge of the reception hall. The crowd erupted in cheers as she took the mic, her elegant gown catching the light as she stood center stage.
"Rodney," she began, smiling proudly at her son. "I told myself I wouldn't cry today... but that was a lie. Watching you grow into the man you are now, and seeing you find your forever love—it's the greatest gift. So I wanted to sing something special... some of the songs that mean the most to me, and hopefully to you too."
The band began to play, and the first notes of "Angel of Mine" filled the room. Monica's voice, timeless and full of emotion, wrapped around every heart in the hall.
Rodney pulled his wife into his arms, swaying with her on the dance floor. "This was the song my mom used to play all the time when I was little," he said softly, resting his forehead against his bride's. "It feels different now... singing it to you."
He mouthed the lyrics as Monica sang, his voice low, eyes never leaving his new wife's. As "For You I Will" played next, he whispered the lyrics in her ear, and she smiled, tears brimming.
Then came "Everything to Me"—a song Rodney remembered hearing his mom rehearse in the living room back in the day, her voice echoing through the house. And now, hearing it live on the most important night of his life, it meant even more.
By the time Monica sang "Love All Over Me", there wasn't a dry eye in the room. Couples danced close, and Rodney wrapped his arms around his wife from behind, swaying with her in sync to his mother's voice.
"You got me loving you more and more by the second," he whispered.
She leaned her head back against his chest. "I love you, Rodney."
"I love you more."
As Monica sang her final note, the crowd stood and erupted into applause. Rodney walked over, wrapping his mother in a tight hug.
"You killed it, Ma," he whispered.
Monica wiped a tear from her eye, laughing softly. "Had to send you off the right way."
Angel met her at the edge of the stage, wrapping her arm around Monica's waist. The two shared a quiet moment together, watching Rodney and his wife laugh with their friends.
"He's got his forever," Angel whispered.
Monica leaned her head on her shoulder. "And I've still got mine."
The music picked back up, and the celebration carried on into the night, full of dancing, laughter, and the kind of joy that only comes from deep love and strong family ties.
