Chirp...chirp...chirp...

Rue could faintly hear the song of the birds outside. He tiredly opens his eyes and looks up. He yawns and turns to look at the window.

It was light out.

The child sluggishly sat up and stretched. He yawns again and looks at his surroundings. He notices his diary beside him and gets out of bed to hide it under.

He slips on his cat flip flops and lazily folds the bed. It wasn't that neat but as a child, Rue did not really care and headed out for Breakfast.

The castle was large. It was grand and impressive at first but now, as a hungry little skeleton, it was a nuisance.

He passed a few turns, stairs, and his mind was too foggy to describe the path he was walking through. Eventually, he reaches the dining hall table and plops down the nearest chair.

Rue looks up and that's when he notices it. It was rather empty. He could hear some clatter in the kitchen but no one else was in the dining hall besides him.

His mom wasn't there. Mr. Nightmare had gone. The other uncles were gone.

The child went to check the kitchen.

Rue peeked from the doorway and he saw a large skeleton there, doing dishes; hole in skull and all. Horror was here.

The tall skeleton turned to the little one and smiled. "Anything you need, Rue? Killer and Boss went out for a doctor's appointment." Horror explains and Rue mindlessly nods at that.

"Uncle Horror... What's for breakfast?" The child asks, stepping into the kitchen.

"Hm? Eh, I don't have any ideas right now but what about you? What do you want to eat?" Horror asks and Rue's grin was the brightest.

"Ooh! Can I have Pancit Canton with an egg—sunny-side up?" The little one asks and Horror nods.

"Alrighty then, Just give me 10 minutes." Horror says, finishing the dishes and grabbing an apron.

Rue smiles and decides to sit at the kitchen table. He watched the big skeleton reach into a drawer and grab a packet of Pancit Canton (Kalamansi Flavor).

The child's eyes darted around to where Horror was next.

Stove... Sink... Cabinet...

Rue's eyes caught the seasoning shakers on the table and without even thinking, he grabs and plays with them.

"Hai I'm mommy... I don't love dad." Rue murmurs, shaking the salt shaker. He turns to the black pepper shaker and mumbles in a weird voice "Greetings, I am Mr. Nightmare. I'm a weird skeleton from the cafe that mommy loves."

"Oh, Mr. Nightmare, I love you." Rue shakes the salt. "I love you too, Killer." He mumbles to the black pepper.

"What about me? I'm so lonely..." The child grabs the sprinkles. Rue pauses.

He looks at the salt and the black pepper. Rue couldn't help but picture the salt and pepper as his mom and Mr. Nightmare.

The child pulls the black pepper and salt away and puts the salt and sprinkles together.

. . .

"Are...you okay, kid?" Horror asks, holding Rue's breakfast. Rue jolts and almost drops the black pepper.

Fortunately, the tall skeleton's reflexes didn't lax and Horror managed to catch the black pepper shaker.

"Woah...that was close." Horror awkwardly chuckles. He placed the food in front of Rue but the child just stared at it.
