“Hey, where is Lady Mylène?”
“Ah, ma’am, Lady Mylène is in His Excellency's office.”
Fancy nodded and headed towards the Duke's office.
In the Duke's office, Claude stood, Christal at his side, as they looked at the other two men respectfully.
Vanderly had reverted to his childlike form, feeling more comfortable as he ran around, especially since Claude's collection of rare objects seemed to please him greatly.
He jumped in front of a bird made of pure porcelain before picking it up, going to show it to Mylène.
“Look, Mylène, it's beautiful, isn't it?”
I gently stroked his hair before smiling at him.
“Yes, my Van, it's magnificent. But you're even more magnificent, you know.”
Vanderly's cheeks turned red and he came to sit next to me, snuggling against my chest as my parents watched in amazement as they couldn't believe it was the almighty Suzaku who was doing this.
Ifnir had decided to browse the books in the office with genuine interest; he thought Claude Von Hosten really did have good taste in books.
Azef sat in the small living room behind, paying no attention.“So you are Suzaku and Genbu, the sacred beasts…”
“Exactly, my child, but call us Vanderly and Ifnir,” the latter replied, introducing himself.
Claude was a little lost, but he wasn't going to argue. What he didn't understand was the fact that these sacred beasts seemed to have a special love for Mylène. They had already seen it with Azef or Seiryu, but that the others were also in love with her, they didn't understand.
“Sweetheart, I would like to know... Did you take the sacred beasts as your lovers?” Claude finally asked, too intrigued by the exchange between Mylène and Vanderly.
“Yes, Dad, that's all my lovers…”
“Even... this child?”
Vanderly scowled, shifting back into his adult form.
“Kid, be careful before you speak… Do you think I don't deserve Mylène?”
“Calm down, Van, that's not what he meant.”
“But Mylène…” Vanderly pouted.
“I love you no matter what you look like.”
That was enough to calm Vanderly, who shifted into his baby bird form, sitting on my lap as I stroked his feathers.
“My lovers all have peculiarities, and their ages can't be expressed in human years, as you know, Mom…”
I gave my mother an almost mocking look, and she blushed before smiling defiantly.
“It's not given to just any woman to seduce a younger man and have him at her feet, my darling.”
“Especially if the two are at least 200 years apart in age.”
“And the woman has remained beautiful and young despite the centuries.”
“And magic helped her.”
If he hadn't had good eyesight, Claude would have thought he saw flashes of light between his wife and daughter.
“Girls…” he tried to speak, but Mylène and Christal, still wearing fake smiles, didn't seem to be listening.
“Mom, it must feel weird to be called that by a girl my age…”
“Not really, but you must be truly thrilled when you realize how easily people could believe you're your mom's sister…”
They both scowled, but the tension was still there.
“My darlings.”
“My love, tell your daughter that her mother is still as beautiful and fresh as when we first met.”
“Dad, tell Mom she's no match for me…”
Claude was between a rock and a hard place and didn't want to talk. Hell, the two of them looked exactly alike except for their eye color, so how could they expect him to talk?
He decided to ignore them; it was the best way to deal with their stupid argument.
“Mylène is the prettiest,” Vanderly chirped on my lap, making me snicker, looking at my mother with defiance and arrogance, knowing she wasn't going to balk.
“Thanks, Van…”
They heard a knock at the door and Claude gave permission to enter, Karl and Edward making their entrance.
I scowled—if we couldn't even enjoy a family gathering anymore without those jerks appearing—Ifnir and Vanderly noticed my change in attitude and immediately stood up. Since I was sitting in my father's private room, my back was to the door. Vanderly then had time to transform into an adult human and look up at the two newcomers. Christal, she had already disappeared.
The two brothers noticed the presence of two new faces in addition to their father: Mylène and this Azef, who was sitting comfortably reading a book.
“Father…” Karl called, Claude going to sit behind his desk to listen to what his sons had to say as he walked past them.
Edward glanced quickly to see Mylène sitting with the head of a red-haired man on her lap, and it intrigued him.
She was stroking his head, and he had raised his hand to play with his nose, all without paying the slightest attention to their presence... who were these men again?
The other man was standing in front of his father's small office library and seemed to be studying his surroundings; that was what bothered him the most.
His father wasn't the type to let just anyone wander freely around his office; the only places allowed were the small living room where he received guests and, as just now, the space in front of his desk to request an interview.
So, between the man rummaging through their father's books, the one lying on the couch resting his head on his "Precious Daughter's" thighs, and Azef reading a book—even though he was a special case, given that his father had clearly indicated that he held a very special place in his heart.
The two found themselves in front of their father, who was now watching them attentively, wanting to know the reason for their visit.
Karl was about to speak when Edward couldn't resist his curiosity and asked the question that had been nagging at his mind and almost burning his lips.
“Father… I would like to know who these men are, please…”
