Say it loud and clear!

Marion screamed, her breathing heavy before retracting, putting both hands over her mouth. She had just realized the enormous blunder she had made and was now looking at Mylène, her eyes trembling.

I grabbed my cup, elegantly drinking my tea before giving her a look full of contempt and mockery.

“And after offering your body to this man whose reputation you knew very well, what happened next? Did that change the pitiful one-sided love you were in? Did he promise to make you his lover, knowing how much he was after me?”

Marion began to cry; she didn't want to tell her rival what had happened. But after all, what could Mylène do with this information? Besides, the prince had promised that she would have a special place at his side if she used her position as Duchess of Venstein to support him.
She violently wiped the tears from her face and glared at Mylène.

“The prince knows I would be more useful to him than you.”

“You are going to marry the Duke of Venstein, I believe.”

“ I love the prince.”

“And why tell me? What do I care if you love him?”

“Come down from your little cloud, Mylène Von Hosten. Even as the wife of the Duke of Venstein, the relationship between the prince and me will always be more beneficial to him than the one with the daughter of a man who left politics.”

I smiled, surprising Marion. It was obvious there had been common ground between the prince and her, which meant that despite her marriage to the Duke of Venstein, she didn't want to give up her love for the prince. I stroked the bracelet around my wrist before staring at Marion.

“I suppose you're right.”

Marion smiled before standing up. Even if it was just for fun, she didn't want him to keep chasing this woman.  And if he didn't stop on his own, she was going to make sure that Mylène was the one to push him away.

“I'll leave you…”

“Oh, Lady Marion De Solsten. I almost forgot, as you know, the second prince is also soon to marry the Grand Duke's daughter… It will therefore be difficult for you to continue your romance because, like you, the young woman is in love.”

“No matter, I'm sure the prince will just use her and…”

“As he will with you… you are no different from her in any way, so try to cherish your future husband instead of chasing the prince.”

“I have no advice to take from you. Once I am Duchess of Venstein, I will teach you to know your place.”

“I can't wait to see that.”

Marion trembled before leaving as if she were being chased.
Once she'd left, I stroked my bracelet and my smile widened.

"This conservation will really be of great use to me, I can assure you of that."

I was about to start eating again when I heard gasps of surprise and amazement, looking up to find Ifnir's stern, angry gaze leering at me from his full height.

I swallowed; I didn't know why, but I felt like I was about to get a scold.

"I...Ifnir?"

I called awkwardly before Ifnir took my hand, carrying me out of the teahouse under the questioning looks of the other customers.

We arrived at a secluded alleyway, and I scowled.  I honestly didn't appreciate being dragged through the streets like that.

“What was that?”

“Why did you leave so suddenly? Do you know how worried we were? We... we thought we'd lost you…”

“I needed to go for a little walk.”

“Alone? Mylène, what if someone had tried to hurt you?”

“You see that's not the case…”

Ifnir looked at me for a long time before sighing and taking me in his arms.

“Don't ever do something like that again, I beg you, we thought we were going crazy.”

“I understand and I apologize.”

Ifnir lifted my face by the chin and we shared a long, sweet kiss, during which all the negative feelings dissipated.

“It's time to go back to the inn.”

“Yes, you're right.”

When we arrived at our room, Azef and Vanderly were pacing back and forth. When the latter saw me, he jumped on me, taking me in his arms.

“Why are you so oblivious, Mylène? Why?”

He hugged me so tightly that I wondered why they were going to such great lengths for so little. I glanced at Azef, who was furious and sulking in the corner, refusing to say a single word to me.

“A problem, Azef?”

“Yes, you. Do you know how dangerous a city of this caliber can be? No, you go off alone and wander around like a fool.”

“Azef, you're overdoing it, don't you think? I'm not some little girl who needs your protection at all times, and it pisses me off that you think I have to ask your permission every minute to go here and there from one part of this city.”

“That's not it... listen, Mylène, we never want to lose you again, and you know, with these people who can appear out of nowhere and take you away…”

“Ifnir, you're exaggerating. Why should they take me away? Listen to me, boys, I'm not the center of the universe, people aren't hiding in a corner just waiting for the moment to take me away, you know. Stop nitpicking.”

“But Mylène... there are so many people who hate you, and what if they came after you? We're just scared, can you understand us too and not just beat us up?”

Vanderly lowered her head like a child being scolded, and finally I sighed. I certainly didn't like the way they were acting, but I also had to put myself in their shoes. They had lost their bearings and been left behind.
They were afraid, and often that feeling could lead to the worst decisions.

“I understand, Vanderly. I'm not trying to criticize you, I just want you to stop acting like I'm reckless and let me act more freely.”

“Yes, Mylène. We're sorry.”

Ifnir and Vanderly responded, while Azef simply raised an eyebrow. He didn't seem to agree with Mylène and continued to pout.

"Azef..."

I called out to him in a reproachful tone, but he didn't react.

"Stop acting like a child."

“I'm not being childish. Besides, I'm serious about the fact that you shouldn't wander around this city with such zeal where you might have the unpleasant encounter of a stupid human who wants to seduce you, or one of those impertinent humans who hover around you, not to mention those idiots who want your life.
Mylène, do you think we wanted the events of centuries ago to happen again? No, we don't, and if it means killing again and again, we will do it because I will never allow another human to separate us from you. No matter how much you hate me this time, I will cut off the evil at the root before their foul poison contaminates you forever.”
