Is this an injustice?

Everyone including Claude looked at me in a daze, especially Sofiane. She thought that Mylène had really wanted to hurt her and that she had found all this compromising evidence on her. But what surprised her was that she had lied about the ownership of the stored wealth. She was expecting other compromising information but Mylène changed the subject immediately, leaving hanging the announcement of the filiation between the headmaid and her daughter, as well as the fact that her marriage to the duke is void because she is still married to the father of her daughter.

“With the mage, we established the type of poison used on Karl and here it is.”

Gabrielle thought the earth would open under her feet when she saw the bag of  poison...

She was able to notice that I was looking at her with mockery, mockery mixed with disdain.

My look clearly told her that she had to stop playing the fool with me, otherwise, she would suffer the consequences.

“Poison...shit who did that? Why would someone want to kill me?” Karl yelled.

Claude shook his head, his daughter was really a demon.

“Well, it was the headmaid who wanted to kill you.” I declared out of nowhere, knocking out everyone in the great hall.

“It’s impossible how… She had no reason to do it…” Edward shouted and I thought I heard… the complete opposite of you.

“That’s right, I also promise to say that she can’t do that.” Sofiane tried to add.

“Listen Sofiane, your testimony doesn’t count since she’s your sister-in-law.” Claude intervened.

Sofiane immediately shut her mouth, Gabrielle remaining in an agonizing silence.  She knew it, Mylène already knew about the poison and was using it to play with her nerves... Seeing the bag, she knew that all the accusations about the headmaid were false... all or at least some of them.

But she couldn't talk about it otherwise she would have admitted to having bought poison to kill Mylène, she had to stay calm and not get agitated.

"Why would she do that? I don't understand." Karl had asked, he was exhausted, he had almost died and wanted to go back to his bed.

"Isn't it obvious? You are the future heir of the Hostens but imagine that you die, then it's Edward and then me, who will remain by force of circumstances the sole heir of the Hostens?"

All eyes turned to Gabrielle who retracted on herself.

“Indeed, the headmaid wanted to get rid of us in order to allow her niece to become dad's sole heir.”

“That's not true...she would never do that…” Sofiane couldn't stand it anymore, yes she embezzled some funds, but the Duke of Hosten is very rich so what she took is only a tiny speck compared to the fortune of the duchy. It's also true that her marriage to the Duke can be annulled and that Gabrielle's father is still alive, but to say that her sister-in-law wanted to kill Karl is insane. She would never have allowed her to do that, she loves Karl and Edward like her children, they are not like that scum Mylène. If only the Duke had loved her, they would have  been a beautiful and happy family and would have gotten rid of Mylène, Gabrielle becoming Claude Von Hosten's only princess.

“So, since she was the one who managed the affairs of the house through you, you are the one in charge; so you were the one who gave orders and she was just the executor.” Claude retorted.

“No, that’s not true, I swear I didn’t know anything about it.”

“That’s easy to say,” I insisted.

*And you Mylène, how do you know all that?” Edward asked after regaining his composure.

“I knew that you all thought that I was the culprit. However, the only person who serves your meals if we are not having a family meal is this headmaid. So I decided to conduct my own little investigation and I was able to catch her unfortunately too late. I imagine that when she discovered that the second prince had brought a mage, she got scared and ran away, leaving solid evidence.”

Karl had lowered his head, they had wanted to kill him and these were the people he had trusted so much. Edward was in the same state while Gabrielle and Sofiane didn't know what to say anymore in the face of everyone's hateful looks.

It wasn't their fault. Even if the story served by Mylène had been true, they would just be the headmaid’ victims but no one would want to take their side and they were almost lynched with their eyes.

Claude looked at Mylène with fascination, not only had she gotten rid of one of Sofiane's great strengths, but she had managed to create a real split among her enemies.

Divide and conquer.
