Jenni ran after her father, having seen a ray of dark energy sprout off the earth and clash against the Goddess light. It was such a powerful surge of power that the ground shook and she almost lost her balance.
They found its source to be the same as that of their goddess's power. The Empress throne room. The building looked as if it had been cut into pieces, no longer holding a solid structure that once belonged to one of the highest institutions in the Empire, the royal family. Now it was rubble and decay. Some of the structure was left, but the ceiling had partly fallen and the walls were holding on as paper, ready to fall after a small blow of air.
She sensed Fanny behind her and Prince Francis by her side. However, Jenni's eyes were focused on her father, who approached the metal doors that separated the place from their reality. They were dented, as if something had bitten through. Their carvings had disappeared after so much mistreatment.
Darkness greeted them from the inside. Jenni felt her blood chill. Heavens had left the place and something primal had taken its place. Something old and furious.
Inside, the darkness was cold, though Jenni knew it was part of her father's power, ready to strike. The dark made it hard to see, but soon enough, her eyes adjusted and she could finally see it.
Jenni had never seen Lord Wolff in his beast form. But at the moment, she wondered if what she was seeing was even real. He was half the size of the room, his height taller than any man, bigger than the statues that surrounded the place. And he was made of shadows, his amber eyes the only colour in the dark.
The gasp behind her told Jenni that this version of Lord Wolff was not the one her maid had seen either. Jenni's father stopped walking, and the cold ran rampant, his sword prepared. Whatever Lord Wolff was now was not something they would shake off easily.
Around the room, icicles grew in sharpness, ready to strike. The cold biting. Although for the beast, it seemed nothing phased it. Her father took a step in its direction and a snarl greeted him.
His paw moved, and Jenni had to contain a gasp. Under the beast's protection, snuggled together, were both Lulu and Prince Cedric. Unmoving. She watched her father halt, his hands shake and the control of his power slip enough that her heart leapt from the cold.
The icicles receded, but her father pushed forward, a hand up while the other carried his sword. He tried a calm approach, fearing, as Jenni did, that any wrong step would cause Lulu and Prince Cedric to be crushed under such powerful paws.
He walked one step forward.
There was a warning snarl.
Another step.
And this time, he got almost bitten.
Her father was trying his best to avoid an escalation. In such a narrow space with a beast half of its size, any attack, if not lethal or knocked out, would bring further chaos.
Jenni's feet were hitching to move closer, but something grabbed her ankle and her attention. Everyone had their eyes glued on the beast that they did not realize a maid was on the floor, gasping for air as her body died, blood gushing out.
With her last string of energy left in her, the maid looked pleading to Jenni, her words clunking as she pleaded for help.
"Please.. my lady... have mercy..."
They were whispers that dead carry. Low and almost impossible to hear.
Jenni locked eyes with the maid, making sure they never lost contact while she shook off her ankle and watched the maid take her last breath.
