Detective Junichiro Tanizaki was at a loss.
"Is it the agency test?" Atsushi asked as beast Akutagawa nodded.
The newcomer was glaring at him. He hadn't said a word ever since hetook a seat across from Tanizaki. Instead, the newcomer simply satmotionlessly as he fixed Tanizaki with a penetrating gaze.
"I'm so sorry!" Tanizaki had bowed his head and apologized a fewmoments earlier, but the newcomer still didn't even blink.
"Did I do something to offend you?" Tanizaki asked beast Akutagawa while he replied with a not really.
They were in a bright café. An old piano tune with a sorrowful melodywas playing in the background, almost so softly that it couldn't be heard. There were four people sitting at the table, each a detective. They hadjust gone to town to buy new furniture for the newcomer and decided tostop by a café on their way back to relax.
Still bowing apologetically,Tanizaki stole a glance at the newcomer's face, only to meet hisfrighteningly piercing gaze. "Fiendish" would be an understatement; it wasas if Cerberus were staring down Tanizaki before the gates of hell. Thatgaze was ruthless, unrelenting—unforgiving.
"Talk about being dramatic Tanizaki-kun." Dazai told the young agent.
"Like you're one to talk." Chuuya said while Dazai just pouted silently.
Tanizaki had encountered various miscreants and criminals due to thenature of his work, but he'd never seen such a vicious look in someone'seyes before. The newcomer's name was Akutagawa. He was a young manwho'd just passed the agency's entrance exam the day before.
"You passed the test? Wouldn't you have most likely just killed everyone on site?" Atsushi said.
"Shut up Jinko." was Akutagawa's reply while the beast people just wondered how their life was so diffrent.
"Uh...," muttered Tanizaki in a feeble voice before timidly continuing,"I'm really sorry about yesterday. Even if it was a test, for me to pretend tobe a mad bomber and threaten to kill you was just... Uh... You're angry, aren't you?"
"Well no shit Sherlock." Chuuya said.
"Language chibi~" Dazai said in a sing-song voice.
To no one's surprise, Akutagawa still didn't reply. He took the ArmedDetective Agency's entrance examination yesterday where he had to protectthe other detectives from a bomber who was played by Tanizaki. Tanizakihad taken a woman hostage, then barricaded himself inside the building anddemanded to see the agency's president. Nevertheless, Akutagawa was ableto subdue him within seconds.
"That's cuz that is Akutagawa." Tachihara said while beast Akutagawa wondered who that man was. It wasn't the first time he had this dout and by the looks of it, Beast Atsushi didn't know who that was either.
"J-Jun, everything's going to be okay. Your sister's right here with you,"assured Naomi in an attempt to cheer Tanizaki up. She had played thebomber's hostage.
"Why am I not surprised?" Kunikida asked to himself.
Akutagawa swiveled his eyes over to Kunikida with palpable intensity.
"Erk!"Even the highly experienced detective couldn't stop himself fromyelping when he came face-to-face with the boy's fearsome glare. A childwould've burst into tears at the sight.Tanizaki suddenly glanced over in Kunikida's direction.
His gazesilently asked:What should we do, Kunikida? The new guy is really mad. We didthreaten him and put him in danger with the whole bomber and hostagething, after all... He's not going to kill us, is he?
