Looking back, there were a few things that didn't add up. I had no idea Iwas a man-eating tiger.
"Neither did I. If Dazai-san hadn't told me, I would've still thought it was something that was after me." Atsushi said.
"Yea because you're stupid like that." Akutagawa said but before Atsushi could talk back, Dazai put a hand on his shoulder.
The orphanage director and the others kept it asecret from me. There was a fiendish white tiger who ravaged theorphanage and hurt people. And this tiger hadn't appeared only a few times,so at the very least, my teachers at the orphanage surely knew that it wasme. And yet, nobody ever told me.It wasn't until much later that I found out why. There was a researcher who came to the orphanage to secretlyinvestigate the tiger, but it killed him.
"Oh the stupid guy who was obsessed with apples? The one who almost killed Dazai?" Chuuya asked annoyed.
"Aww, is chibi worried about me? You make me blush." Dazai said.
"Worried my ass."
"Language Chuuya-kun" "Sorry Ane-san."
He had long hair the color of whitemist and eyes as red as apples. Had his death gone public, the militarypolice would've intervened and killed the dangerous tiger—me.But the director covered up the accident.
"He seems to care for you in his own twisted way." Tanizaki said.
He threw the researcher's bodyinto a river and burned his belongings. He then got the teachers together sothey could coordinate their story:
"No researcher ever came here."
Then, after checking if I had any memory of what happened when I was a tiger, the director locked me in a basement cell. He continued handling theaftermath every time the tiger went berserk going forward. He locked me inthe basement in seclusion so there wouldn't be any victims—so I wouldn'thurt anyone.
"Oh so that's why he locked you. If you ask me, he should've told you the reason. Would be less messy that way." Higuchi said.
"All the twisted people always speak in riddles. Take the hard path while there's an easy one right under their nose. Like if you had to cross a crocodile filled river, they would swim through it rather than taking the bridge that was right beside them." Tachihara said scoffing.
Although he said it as a means of taunting, Gin felt something was wrong the way he had said it. She felt sadness in his words but she didn't investigate furthur.
That was why I always believed that the tiger was a savage beast thatcame from somewhere far, far away. The director knew me better thananyone else. He even understood that I wouldn't be able to bear it if I knewthat I was the tiger. And he knew that he had to continue protecting me,keeping me from going into the outside world, until I was old enough to beable to control the tiger and accept what I am.
